I was in at the local gun shop this week and a particular rifle caught my eye. It is a Win model 70 1964 model according to shop owner, I need to get the serial number to check. It is a 243 with the wood stock and heavy varmint type barrel. It appears to be in great shape, I didn't use a bore scope or anything like that. He wants $900 for the rifle with a cheaper scope on it that I would remove anyways. Wanted to hear from some of you what would be some concerns and is it reasonably priced. Also any guesses to twist rate and any experience with one of these. Rifles main use would be hunting deer antelope varmints and target shooting nothig too extreme as I have stainless synthetic rifles for that. Thanks.

anyone have any idea the twist rate on this rifle I would guess 1 in 10 but I know some were made with 1 in 12 I don't want to spend that kind of money on a gun that cant shoot 87 grain and heavier.

if the action has a clip slot it is the TARGET Model. If it doesn't it is the Varmint model. Since it is 243 chances are it is a varmint model. New ones with pencil thin barrels are 799.00 as I just looked at one an hour ago at store.

If its a pre-64 and in dicent shape I think its worth $900. But I don't see the advantage of the Pre-64 over other Winchesters (I have several) except its pre 64. Some people like that. I just like Winchesters. I have a couple target rifles on the M70 action and my go to hunting rifles are Model 70s.

I'd probably buy it at that price "Just Because"

Concerns?

Gonna shoot longrange? Need a 1:8 twist barrel.
Gonna shoot LR? Probably need a new stock, unless you just want to see how well you can shoot with a wooden stock; kinda like a handicap...

Want a longrange shooter in .243? Why? The cartridge is very overbore and eats barrels almost as bad as a 6.5x284, but doesn't give you the 142gr smk bullet access.

Winchester 70 is a great platform to build on. Look for a Heavy Varmint with the H-S Precision stock and plan on upgrading the barrel. Get better barrel-life if you go .308 and good LR performance, can always get Pac-Nor to do a pre-fit barrel in .243 and you are ahead of the game by a mile.

If this is a nostalgia thing; go for it and have fun.
Have seen a number of custom High-Power NRA guns on gunbroker with synthetic stock and custom barrels, but any .243 barrel that's been more than gently used is a short-term proposition.

Offer the guy about 2/3 of what he's asking in cash and see.
Lots of post-64 target 70s on gunbroker in the $600-$700 range. If the rifle you're looking at comes with Redfield International rear aperture sight, and front globe; then your deal at $900 might be ballpark.

Good luck!

If it's a Pre-64 HB .243Win. in Original unmolested condition, in good or better shape for $900 - buy it. With a decent scope it should meet your hunting expectation. But, do not modify the rifle. If you are looking for something to customize, or shoot really far - go to another platform. IMO; YMMV

Good luck
