I was looking for everyones opinion on what to buy based on these parameters:
I'm looking for something in .308 either bolt or semi-auto and I want it to be the most accurate gun I can get for the money. I am looking to spend anywhere from $800-$1500 on just the gun, optics not included and of course the less expensive the better. What would you do?

Re: What would you buy?

I think eighter of the above would be good choices. But if it was up to me I would buy a Remington 700 SPS in 308. After that spend the rest of my money and every bit more I could scrape up on the best scope I could find. I would recomend a Nightforce 100%, also dont skimp out on the rings and base. Then go out and learn to shoot! As you are learning the basics start saving up to up grade the stock, Mcmillan, Manners, Mcree, or an AICS which ever fits your bill best. Now you have something to hone the basics you have just learned. As you get all the kniks worked out of your mechanics you can save for and action job and a premimum barrel. After that you now have a top end weapon system that didnt break the bank on the first purchase and you didnt use up 1/2 of your barrel life getting the mechanics down.

My point is this if you are just getting into this sport there are several good choices in rifles that will be plenty capable of shooting up to your standards while you are learning for around $600 or less. Spend the big money on optics b/c a inexpensive scope is just that and you will always loose your ass on optics if you buy low and then up grade. If you buy low and then up grade in a rifle you basically dont loose very much if anything. It also gives you a chance to learn on a less expencive tool and then as you learn bring it up to your standards. The main reason I chose a 700 for a starter rifle is they have the most aftermarket parts avaliable, and are proably the most desireable if you decide to sell it. Savage and Tikka also make very high quality "less expensive" rifles too, so your options are broad.

Hope this helps.

Re: What would you buy?

If you have a gun shop around, go and hold/touch every .308 they have and see what fits you best and your needs. My choice when I was in your situation was a Remington model 700 sps varmint. You can then use the extra money to get a stock that fits you, a scope and ammo! Good luck!

Re: What would you buy?

I like the 5R.
That is not the only answer.
The question that needs answered is "what do you plan on doing with it?"

If it is strictly a range gun, never to see a "tactical" comp or the hunting fields, then I dare say you would be hard pressed to find something better than a Savage F/TR for the money.

If you want, a particular stock that strikes your fancy and fits you better, then an SPS varmint or tactical to get you in the door for between 550 - 600 bones with plenty left over for a top shelf stock like an AICS, McMillan, McCrees or XLR.

HOWA 1500 varmint, very nice action, one piece bolt.

Tikka T3 tactical.

CZ Varmint Kevlar.

Plenty of choices out there, only you can decide.

Re: What would you buy?

The 5R is really good. I think the best bang for your buck is a Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD. I had one in a Bell and Carlson stock. It shot right around 1/2 moa.

Re: What would you buy?

I have held and played with both the Remington 700 SP and the Savage 10 FP's and I liked them both. The Remington was pretty long for me I'm only about 5'6'' tall but its not like I'm gonna be lugging it through the woods. I plan on mostly target shooting with it with the occasional entry level competitions. My father owns 250 acres and we have a great place to shoot anything up to about 1000 yards. I have been shooting all my life and have a nice collection so I know how to handle a weapon. I just don't really have anything setup for longer range shooting and wanted to give it a shot.

Re: What would you buy?

Tikka T3 Scout(20" barrel) or tactical(24" barrel)
pros: exellent trigger,smooth action,very accurate.will hold .5moa at 200yd and .75moa at 600yd.
cons : stock the the best for price range.
you can pick up a scout for about $800

this was shot with the scout at 200yds

Re: What would you buy?

best bang for my my buck was to take my time to find a used rifle, then have a smith do whatever i wanted done. it will take longer but saved me a ton of money. i picked up an almost brand new savage model 10 for 300. it was so new the savage logo on the bolt had no wear marks on it yet.

another thing, and i'll probably catch alot of flak for this, but most of the guys on here spend alot more money on a rifle than they need to. a 1/4 moa rifle in the hands of a 1 moa shooter becomes a 1 moa rifle. for a few years before i had anything done to my savage i'd screw around with a couple guys with custom rigs, and that savage would hang with them out to 500 any day of the week.

Re: What would you buy?

I think the first thing you need to decide is if you want a bolt action or a semiauto.

Then go from there.

At the price range you have of $1500

You can do well with either choice.

Re: What would you buy?

That was part of what I was wondering is what would most of you pick semi auto or bolt action? I'm kinda leaning towards a bolt action but like not having to disrupt sight picture with a semi auto.

Re: What would you buy?

out of the box ready 5r if you want a project budget gun sps varmit lose the stock have a good stock like bell and carlson or save your money up and drop it in a manners stock...imho

Re: What would you buy?

I would look at the For Sale Section on The Hide as you will be amazed at the variety of rifles that you can get at a good price. If you are patient you can do some nice dealing.

Re: What would you buy?

This is my first bolt gun. Remington 700 sps varmint .308. So far I'm into it for $1100. Ordering a new B&C stock for it this week for $230. With PRVI Match, I shoot ok with it. Once the new stock comes in, I'm taking it to the range with some Hornady Match Amax 168grn. I'm expecting much better results than 3in groups from the PRVI and the cheap plastic stock.

Re: What would you buy?

I have both and both are shooters. Savage 12 in 308 will take my hand loads and put 5 in a group at 100 you could cover up with a nickle, and my Remy Tactical will do the same. Of couse if I do my part....

Re: What would you buy?

I would have to agree with JACQ, Savage 10 or 12, I have a Savage Model 12 and its an amzing rifle, even out of the box and for the price its hard to beat.

Re: What would you buy?

I have yet to see a bolt action Savage that just does not shoot. I am a Remington guy and I do not like the look of the savage rifles but they shoot. If you do not like the stock on either rifle aftermarket are available for Remington or savage.

I like shooting my Semi-auto rifles and now they shoot very well I still like a good bolt for long range shooting. Semi or bolt is totally up to the user. Both are capable of some very good long range shooting.

Re: What would you buy?

This is my savage. Its not a .308 but it still is one hell of a rifle

Savage Model 12 .223
Burris 6.5-20x50 tactical mildot scope

Re: What would you buy?

I have a T3 Tactical and have not shot a better rifle for the money. But I think you'll do well with any of the above suggestions.

Re: What would you buy?

Savage 12 Palma if you dont mind it being single shot. Well he did say the most accurate for around 1500 just the gun. just sayn. But its hard to beat the 5r or the SPS Tactical.

Spent $1200 on the whole set up. Still working on hand loads to get her to hit a 16x23" plate at 1000 yards. So far I'm getting there. Its my budget shooting. Trying to prove you don't need a $5k set up to hit 1000.

A few more tweaks and i think she can do it. I'm getting some ok groups at 800 yards right now. But I still have to tweak the load for this rifle.

You ABSOLUTELY don't need a $5k gun to shoot well at 1000 yds. I was hitting a plate the same size at 1k with a pretty stock SPS-T and a $450 Falcon Menace scope. Total budget setup. The key for me was good hand loads tuned for the gun and lots of trigger time.

Don't be intimidated by 1k, it's not some magical distance. Dont feel like you have to be able to shoot tiny groups before you try longer distance stuff. If you can hold 1 MOA consistently, you can hit that plate. At that range it's a lot of reading the wind.

One thing that really helped me was really working on making sure I could see my own hits rather than rely on a spotter. That means you need to get behind the gun properly so the gun's not hopping sideways during the TOF. Another thing that really helps is to get your plate sitting on the ground if you can. If it's up on a stand, you won't be able to see where the misses go because a left/right miss will not be able to be corrected for very well.

Bottom line is: if you can shoot at 1k, just get out and do it. There's no substitute for the actual thing. For a real world example, I just took a buddy of mine in town last Monday out to my 1k yard "secret location". He was an AR carbine guy and had never in his life shot past 200 yds and had never shot a precision rifle. We warmed up with a few rounds at 425 and then 750 to get a feel for the rifle and then moved to 1000. With a little bit of coaching, he was hitting a 25x15" plate within 4-5 rounds with a 10 mph full value wind. Now he wasn't hitting it everytime, but enough that it wasn't a fluke. Just go have fun and learn by doing.

Re: What would you buy?

For the money, I don't think you can beat that F class target rifle Savage sells. $1100ish I think. Super trigger, and a quality laminated stock. Not all Tactic-ool though.
