I am going to start offering custom rifles/packages and I am thinking of offering them using a Howa action or remington action for the bases. I will probably use both if they are both popular but I just wanted to see what you guys thought you would like to see offered. Thanks

Re: what would you like to see?

I would really consider using T3 actions instead.
Stiffer stronger action for precision builds, integreated scopemount rail, barrel that is really good from the beginning.

While really both the Remington and the Howa more are "hunting actions" prepared for open sights as there is no integral rail and it's open actions so they are not nearly as stiff as some of the more closed actions.

Im pretty sure the Remington 700 has been around for a long time and is the basis for most custom action footprints. While most are improved the Rem700 has proven itself as a base to build yourself a very nice accurate rifle.

Other then that, the actions that Defiance Machine are putting out are stellar. The Templar from GAP and SAC's new Alpha 11 are some of the nicest out there.

you are absolutely right that Remington 700 is sufficient, but in my opinion its not optimized.
The fact that its an open action that have pretty low stiffness and lacks an integral rail makes is less good for a long range gun.

In the 80th I was competing a lot with CG63 and CG80 competition rifles in Swedish high power rifle competitions, rifles built on mauser modell 96 actions. Some of those rifles really shoot insanely good, and there was almost never an issue with them.
But does that make them optimized for a long range gun in 2011?

Another funny comparision that can be made is Sako-Tikka.
They are made in the same factory.
Using same barrels, and same quality controll.
(I have been there)
Still T3 rifles shoots normally better than normal Sako hunting rifles (TRG not included in the comparision) and the fun thing is that the T3 plastic stock is everything else than impressive, and it's not bedded either. And the T3 is the budget gun while the Sako is the premium......
Still it outshoots many customguns........

Why? my guess would be that it's the stiffness in the action who makes a big part of the accuracy, and its not even bedded......

Back to the thread.
Optimized action for long range rifles are something stiff with integral rail (if not open sights should be used)
Surgeon is very optimized, really a great action.
Would really love one of those myself.
But if we are talking budget, the T3 is a very strong competitor.

I wouldent build anything such on an action that lacks integral rail, why should one, the integral rail systems are availble and there is no reason to go for less good when more good is avilble and actually not more expensive.

Re: what would you like to see?

I do like the tikka actions but they are lacking aftermarket parts like the remington and Howa and savage actions. I like being able to have the option of many off the shelf stocks and triggers. Thanks for the replys and info.

Re: what would you like to see?

Well, the aftermarket assesory supply for the 700 is in the same tremendous size as the 1911 parts market.
But how much stuff can you really hang on to a gun?

To the T3 there is all you possible can need, triggers, bottommetal, scopemounts, stocks, bolt schrouds etc.....

I've been saying the same thing about Howa actions for years. A lot of people just can't seem to understand the significance of that concept.

Are you going to become a contributing site sponsor before you offer said packages? While you're mulling that over...I would rather see a Tikka over a Howa.
