What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

I'm looking to build a .308 long range rifle. As of right now I'm looking somewere bettween the Remmington 700, Savage, and Howa 1500. I am leaning towards the Howa at the moment with a bell and carlson stock to start with, but would love to hear what everyone else has to say. No matter what rifle it is I will most likely change the stock out and would like to be able to do most of the work myself, this makes a problem for the 700 I'm told because you need special equip to do most things. So anyone that has a recomendation as far as action groups and even stocks please chime in.

TIA
Sean

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

I would say that you get a Remington 700 SPS Tactical, and change the stock to the Bell and Carlson of your choice. Whoever told you changing a stock required special tools, i suggest you go back and punch them in the mouth. It requires unscrewing 2 screws pulling the barrel action out, putting barreled action in new stock and tightening 2 screws back down.

Being a very satisfied Howa owner, you can guess my answer!

Mine as a Houge stock and while not ideal, it still shoots and honest average 1/2 MOA with loads it likes...If I were buying again, I'd probably go for the heavy barrelled version....

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

SPS Tactial fan here as well, although I'm not a Bell and Carlson fan. Some have enjoyed their stocks, I guess I just got a lemon.

Put my SPS Tac into a McM A5 and haven't looked back. Consistant sub MOA shooter for just over $1K (minus optics and rings/mount).

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

I already own a rem 700 in .270 and love it, it's my deer hunting rifle. I originally wanted another one in .308 mostly cause I like my .270 so much and have had nothing but great things from all my remmingtons. But this weekend I saw a Howa in action and liked it alot. I will most likely get the remmington though. And I was told you need a smith to work on the rem not to just change the stock, for example the tactical bolt handle. But I'll find out when I get there I guess. Thanks for some quick answers, but keep them coming! Can't wait to get some more advise and oppinios out here.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

Another vote for the rem700 sps In the stock of your choice (I went aics) the hogue stock isn't worth much but the action is sub moa. Changing the stock is easy, there are several vendors here on the hide who will change out the knob for you for a fair price.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

Most actions will need a smith when it comes to cutting and applying upgrades to the action. Im not certain on the Howas so i dont know what can and cant be done to them without a smith.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

i think you will find all the savage guys will say savage, all the remy guys will say remy. go to a gunshow and see what feels best. i dont think either will be a bad choice. dont know anything about a howa.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

I'm more of a Remy guy and say go for the 700 SS 5R in .308. They are expensive but ya got to pay to play. The Savage doesn't seem like a bad rifle either...

+1 to this. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. FWIW, I like the Rem's but have seen guys with Savages shoot incredibly well.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

ok I have owned both the 700 and savage 10fp both have ups and downs, I myself prefer the action of the 700 but out of the box goes to savage hands down. Now if your looking to put money into it the 700 can be changed but it is really all a matter of the budget.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

The reason I was looking at the savage is because I heard the out of the box was a great rifle, but what is all nessesary to upgrade the remmington? I am more then willing to put the money down for the better rifle. But at the same time I would rather keep the budget down some if I can. If the rem ness a trigger job and a stock then I can handle that, but to have to completely remake the gun is above my means for now. I want this to be my starter long range gun so I realize that I will he putting some money down, but I just want it to be reasonable.

Thanks
Sean

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

my savage is a great rifle, biggest dislike was how the accu-trigger is set up it teaches good practices but if you pull is slightly off or you close the bolt to hard the gun will not fire till you cycle it again. For bench rest shooting i would go with the savage or field rem 700 but that is just my opinion.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

Im with the others that have said they are all good, but you need to decide which is "good for you." the best thing you can do is get your hands on each and make the call yourself. for the record though, i have a Savage 10FCP HS Precision and love it. good luck.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

I looked today at the barreled action and like the idea of that simply because it's so much cheaper then buying a full rifle then buying a stock. When you buy a barreled action is it pretty much just a drop in into the stock, or do I need to buy a bolt and trigger etc? I like the idea of this also because of the feel of I built my rifle, I'm a sucker for bragging rights when people ask about it. I don't like to gloat but I do like being able to say I built it custom for me and did it myself. But that rem 700 still looks tempting

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

i would get the remmy 700 SPS Tac or the Savage that has the McMillan stock they run about 1000. i seen a guy at the range shoot some real nice groups with the Savage. i personally own a remmy 700 SPS Tac and i have it mounted on a 5R take off stock and it shoot great also.

Re: What's the best .308 for a decent budget?

You could just get a bare bones Savage action and assemble your own custom rifle and stay right at around $1000.

Savage Stevens action - $260
Prefit barrel of your choice (Shilen/McGowen/Brux/Douglas - $325
Competition trigger from SSS - $97
B&C Medalist stock - $220

This is the route I am going from now on. It is more fulfilling building your own in my opinion.

other guys mentioned the bolt issue. they solved it by adjusting the pull to a little higher poundage.

also, a savage action over a stevens is only about $100 more.

to the OP, look in the for sale. i think there may still be a 10FCP-HS for $800 for sale
