Gunsmithing whats the proper way to test for slam fires?

Re: whats the proper way to test for slam fires?

I run the bolt like a raped ape. If it passes I whack the C. piece with a leather mallet a few times. If that passes I do the bump test on the R. pad.

I'm paranoid though.

I run the bolt fairly hard also. Plus I hit the rear of the recoil lug with a hard rubber mallet and lastly I hit tang too.

If these tests don't trip the sear I call it good.

On a note, you can cause that nasty looking gouge on the bolt handle that most of you have probably seen when working the bolt too hard on the Rem 700's.

This is fairly common on the receivers that have been trued, and as a result, the bolt handle cam timing is off with the mating cam surface on the rear bridge of the receiver. If the timing has been fixed, you should be okay.

Use common sense when working the bolt, you don't have to run it as hard as you can.

i can make it fire if i run the bolt with my palm pretty dang hard. Harder than i would ever run it in the field. i dropped the rifle onto the butt pad from 14 inchs though, and it did not go off.

Sounds like you may need to increase the pull weight and or sear engagement also.

IMHO dropping the rifle on the butt/recoil pad from a foot or two doesn't satisfy me. The recoil pad soaks up a lot of the shock. That's why I like using the hard rubber mallet directly on the recoil lug and tang (barreled action out of the stock).

The money smiths charge to adjust a trigger correctly is well spent from a safety standpoint. I suggest if you are questioning the safety of your trigger adjustment, you should probably have it checked out by a smith.

Please don't take this wrong, but an unsafe trigger is as bad as it gets.
