Shooting my .260 last weekend trying to work through final load development. First group was just to warm the gun up, 300 yards no wind quarter sized group....not too bad. Second group 5 shots 41.0g of h4350...half dollar sized group. Group 3 41.5 g (which was my best group last time) all 5 shots were a foot high off the target.....WTF? Next group same thing, way high. So i bring my point of aim to the bottom of the target and shoot 2 more groups 42.5&43.0 and both are about a foot high and measure between 5&6 inches.

Barrell has about 175 rounds through it, havent cleaned it for about 75 rounds. Made sure everything was tight before i went out, wind wasnt a factor. Im by no means a great shooter but i think i can manage not to pull my shots that bad.

Re: Whats this sound like to you?

definitely check the rings. One of my hunting rifles did the same thing. One of my rings was actually cracked, but you couldn't see the crack until the scope was out of it. Mind you it was an older rifle with older rings.

I have seen high pressure move shots like that before.

ya i did......and i think my max velocity for the day was like 2860 with 43.0 gr of h4350.....no pressure signs

Re: Whats this sound like to you?

Your moving your charge up .5 grains without adjusting your elevation. Your going to be higher with every increment higher you go in the charge. I was testing loads at 1000yd this last weekend with my Creedmoor and every .5 grains up I went my elevation POI would change by at least a foot or more when the wind was consistent. Going up by a foot at 300 is a lot though but like bmt said, it could be that your getting a lot more pressure. You also didn't mention if the wind picked up between your strings of shots, a tail wind can lift the bullet quite a bit you'd be surprised. If not then it sounds like something is loose or cracked somewhere. Which bullet are you running?

Re: Whats this sound like to you?

good info dogg

140 amax

I forgot to mention that my first 3 shots (fowlers) were at 43.0g and when i shot my first group (41.0g) it was at almost the same poi, and when i say a foot i mean more like 18 inches. There might have been wind but it was too subtle for me to notice, but maybe.

Re: Whats this sound like to you?

That's strange your foulers and your group shots were so close poi. Sounds like something more than wind, it would take one hell of an upward gust to throw them that far up. Not to mention that it would throw the windage off quite a bit as well and you didn't mention that. I'd keep checking everything on the rifle. Maybe take the rings off the base and inspect everything. If nothing else then your scope might have taken a shit. If you have a spare scope I'd take it to the range and if the problem persists then switch the scopes and see what happens. Clean the barrel so you can rule that out as well. Good choice with the 140 AMAX's they're the shit.

Re: Whats this sound like to you?

im checking everything right now and loading up some more rounds while the barrel soaks in wipeout. Going out to the range later and well see if i get the same results.

Scope is a new IOR 3-18 gen 4 so if it took a shit im probably going to have a brain Aneurysm and if i survive ill beat a puppy to death with it.

Re: Whats this sound like to you?

Just got done at the range and it was a good day

Clean barrel shot about .8 which is about normal for that load (41g h4350) poi was all dead on...went out to 375 dialed up 1.9 mills and banged a about a 3.25 in 8 or 9 shot group into an old disk blade. So it seems like cleaning made a difference.

I think it might have had to do with my muzzle crown being very dirty behind the brake.....it was very hard to remove for cleaning and it has never been like that..so maybe carbon build up on the crown was the culprit

Re: Whats this sound like to you?

Great to hear you figured it out and didn't have an aneurysm ! Sounds like that might've been what caused it since you didn't find anything else wrong.
