What's your favorite barrel contour?

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

All in what you want it for, if want to shoot it a bunch and maintain accuracy through a warm bore, I would go with an MTU.

If you want a hybrid of accuracy and portability I would go with a varmint contour.

I personally have a 20" MTU on my go to rifle, it is heavy, but I don't really have to carry it that much. My goal is to shoot the heck out of it.

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

I have several tactical rifles I have build in the last couple of years in different calibers. All of them are M24 contours some fluted some not. If you are going to lay down and shoot everything, or you dont mind packing around a 15lb rifle go heavy. But if youare going to pack it around a bunch, or shoot matches that require movement, odd positions and off hand stuff go lighter, rem varmint or similar. My next build will have a lighter contour, so at least I have options!

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

kreiger heavy palma at 20 inches with 1.25 inch cut off the rear. That seems to be a good balance between weight and portability. Length makes a huge difference. Also the shorter the barrel the lighter you can go and still keep it stiff. I would not go over 20 inches for a .308. Have fun turning down that beast! Might cost less just to order a precontoured barrel and sell that one. Just my experience, happy shooting.

Choose by how heavy you want the rifle and the length.

I use a Tubb contour on my tactical rifle. It's a good compromise of weight, balance and stiffness. Medium Palma is close to the same contour.

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

Its actually a project for gunsmithing school so Im stuck with turning it down haha it's a Green Mountain blank so even if i screw it up I'm not out too much money. It will be mostly for prone/bench shooting, a few tactical rifle matches, and the occasional coyote/hunting trip. The idea ive got in my head now is 22 inches to keep it fairly light with the first 3 inches 1.2 and a straight taper to .96ish at the muzzle

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

I went with the med palma as well for my 6.5 build based on Rob01' advice. I did a .308 MTU at 24 with a FTE brake and I have to admit, while it's a extreme pleasure to shoot, it's heavy as can be. With the AICS and scope, 18.5

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

I would (and do) prefer a factory varmint contour for the practical reason that this one of the most popular countours that aftermarket stocks' barrel channels are demensioned to accept. No good reason to invent new problems. Also, mine have always shot well.

As for the most accurate barrel contour, I think the accuracy is at least as much in the shooter as in the barrel.

I do not adhere to the recent trend toward shorter rifle barrels. They have their place, but that's in close quarters and thick brush.

Anywhere else, and I think trimming barrel length is a contrarian fad. The whole point about having a rifle is to be able to shoot further. Shorter barrels do not help that happen.

If I wanted a barrel shorter than 26". I'd be looking for a carbine, intending it for entirely different purposes, and chambering it with a smaller capacity cartridge.

I like a .44 Mag carbine, and a .30-'06 rifle. So call me a Neanderthaler...

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

If weight is a concern I'd choose a heavier shorter barrel than longer skinner barrel of the same weight.

I like the contour of my tikka varmint. It's .875 at the muzzle at 24". Thicker than a rem varmint.

I can shoot 5 five shot groups in a row and not loose any accuracy or poi. I can also shoot off hand,

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

Medium Palma screwed on a TRG action finished @26 , Stiller with a HV contour finished @ 23 in AIC's also handles very nicely. Both can take the heat and shoot better than I can. I run suppressors on both.

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

I have a M40 and a MTU, both are very similar with the MTU being slightly thicker. I don't think you gain anything going from one to the other, just weight which I like because of how steady it makes your rifle . If you are not going to carry it around all day I'd say MTU

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

M24 as I get older I realize that the extra weight is not needed especially when shooting good builds such as GAP rifles.

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

I won't be using anything heavier than a Remington varmint/sendero on future builds. But all my rifles double as hunting rifles and my two M24 contours get rather heavy after a few hours of carry. For hunting I dont want anything over 11 pounds total rifle and scope and it needs to be a balanced weight. If I only were to use it as a range rifle or for comps then I wouldn't care.

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

#7 Douglas. It is between the Remington varmint and MTU, but tends to favor the MTU in size. To me, it looks better in an HTG as it does not overwhelm the forenend.

Re: What's your favorite barrel contour?

Light palma. I hunt with my rifles so I don't like to go much heavier. They fit a rem varmint channel pretty well but they're just a bit lighter. My 243 has a 26" brux light palma and shoots great. I have a 6.5x47 lapua being built now on a 24" brux light palma and I hope it shoots too.
