I have not used the 4k yet but I was an early X sight owner and have helped set up an X- II. Based on my experience of the first two versions the user has to be willing to tinker with settings and be open minded. The first two versions were not plug and play by any means. Still have the original X sight and have played with it enough to have it be very functional out to 125-150 yards. One other thing to consider is how and where you plan to hunt at night, if you are going to use in thicker cover you are going to run into what I call wash out from the IR beam hitting objects that are closer to you than what you are trying to look at. You will see a lot of white in the display and very little of the target further out. However, if you spend more time in open areas you should be able to shoot 125-150 yards. IMO if you like puzzles you will get along fine with the X if you are easily frustrated may not be for you.
