Aloha state HI
first of all english is a second laguage, forgive me if you cant/dont understand me.anyway as we all know reloading is like a never ending process we keep and almost never stop "fishing" for that all day sub moa load althou we also have those bad days on those we call great load.i reload mostly all my ammo im sure im not alone when i say its hard to pleased me when it comes to test load.some of my recent phost on 260/ 6.5 thread i showed my result a week ago here http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...uilds-specs-picture-thread-3.html#post2444892.
At that very moment all my buddy that i was shooting with also using precision rifle( when i say precision its all custom and ment to shoot great) i guess i steped on dog crap that day, it was my first time using 139 scenar ive been loyal to 140smk. they all praising my result at 500yd some of them came close.but i was "the man" that day even myself couldnt believe on my own achievment.BUT! when im here reading about loading/shooting i cant stop thinking does it stop from there? or should i keep on trying to fish that load .264 moa on 500yd 5 shot almost 1/4 of moa.call me stupid or dumb if i say, i feel like i still want to try/keep diff load.this morning i ordered 140amax ive been wanted to try this.my buddy said to me right away "what are u f**in dumb! why mess with perfection! what about you guys when do you say "this it!" this my load for this rifle forever(till barrel die)..so basicaly im looking when to draw the line.tnx
oh by the way this same rifle shot 4" outside to outside at 1k last sat same load as the 500yd

SH you been great and helpfull..lots of great people/friends here.

I'd say stop when you start having diminishing returns. Meaning that if you are shooting your rifle more in the search of that perfect load than you are for fun or a match than you may wanna stop and be happy with what you got.... You may burn out your barrel before you find that perfect load and then you'll have to start all over on a new barrel.

I like to shoot and I like to test new loads.

Some times I do both, sometimes I develop loads when I get a good deal on bullets.

Pistol ammo is an easy process which usually doesn't require a whole lot of testing. Rifle is a different story, I have different loads for different guns in the same caliber that I shoot at a certain distance.

If I can get a cheap bullet/powder charge to shoot sub MOA out to 300 I will do so. Its easy on the brass and easy on the wallet.
Then I have brass that's pushed hard for accuracy and FPS to shoot out to 1K. The tweaking on that combination really never stops until I'm "satisfied"

I have loads in between which I tweak here and there, some are for hunting and some are to smack steel at 600 yards.

My point, its not always the load that needs to be happy... It's you!

thats prolly one of the reason why i wanted and bought the amax.compare to scenar the price are almost half way.i hope it will shoot as great as smk and scenar and who knows ill stay there :) ty for the response

32 years of fly fishing and as long as I can stand and swing my rod I'll keep on doing it.

I stop testing for a better load when I think I have one that exceeds my ability. Zen mind is the ultimate objective of reloading and shooting. Just like in golf, if I care about how I shoot, it's never good enough. If I shoot and enjoy no matter what, generally (looking at my targets) I shoot very well.

Sounds like you enjoy the research and you want to find out how many different bullets/loads you can develop that will shoot as well or better. I don't see a problem in continuing on. You have "the load" right now, but if you really enjoy it keep shooting. Who knows, you may well end up with 1/8moa, then you'll have another "the load".
Economics prevents me from continuing to search for better and better loads, for now anyway, it hasn't always been that way.

I'm having trouble deciding when to say when right now, I have a great load for my .243 and one for my .260 but they are fairly mild loads. Do I try to go up until I get to the next accuracy node even though that will be about max pressure and will shorten the barrel life quite a bit? For the most part my shooting will only be out to 600 yards and I don't shoot competitions yet so what would you guys do?
