Seems to always happen that when I want to go pick something up no one ever has it in stock. I have spent the last hour trying to track down a new cb radio, because I am making a round trip to ohio and back. Leaving tomorrow night and driving straight there and back non stop. Figured it would be nice to have a new cb with the weather stations and found the model I want and no store with 60 miles of me have one. Finally got a hold of a truck stop along the way and he is going to hold it for me, guess that will be my first stop.

Am I the only one that has this problem? Seems to always happen to me.

I've kept a cb in the truck for the last several years. It does prove useful for highway detours and weather warnings. One word of caution - turn the volume down when you're not actively using the radio. Around here, noon on Wednesday is when they test the emergency radio signal. The first time I heard it, I almost ran off the road. Junk is surprising when there's no other sound except tires on pavement and the radio volume is maxed out.

Good to know lol, I had one in my old truck but it was cheap and never worked very good so I never used it. But making this long trip and a little bit of bad weather a head of me I think it will be well worth the money to spend on a decent one to help out.

So which radio you gonna buy? I had a Cobra 78 elite in my work vehicle last year, it had weather which came in handy when I had to go out to Rawlins WY. Although most states you can just dial 511 and get an up to the hour highway closures.

I have an old school Cobra 19 in my Jeep, it is more than enough for the Jeep trails.

The key thing is to have the guy at the truck stop install it, and tune it. Unless you have SWR meter. A radio that is not properly set up can burn up its output transistors or just not work at its best. Also propagation is good this year, as it is the peak of the 11 year sunspot cycle. You may be able to hit a mile or 2 with the standard FCC 4 watts.

Exactly Kriag that is the problem that I have all the time.

roggom, I bought the Uniden Bearcat 880, with a 5' Wilson top load antenna. I installed it myself and the radio has a swr meter built in and the antenna is user adjustable and the radio has a calibration setting so I had my swr at 1.2. There were a few times out in the open that I was getting a good clear signal from 10 miles.

Took 36 hours and 2300 miles but I made it no problem just a long journey.
