Gunsmithing WHERE IS. . .

Re: WHERE IS. . .

Same one I linked in my 2nd response

Re: WHERE IS. . .

Just as an update, its still working perfectly!

Even after I left it running over night. I internally had to stop telling my wife that she left the kitchen oven on for about a month as my own self-punishment.

I've since resumed commenting when she leaves it on.

I normally don't share pics of customer's jobs but I'll have some pics of an AR pretty soon. It will be my first AR and is my personal first AR. Bushmaster Predator upper and DPMS lower. Its probably going to be a PITA with all of the little parts and crap. Going for a two-tone FDE and black theme like my Taurus 92.

Its been almost a year since I've painted anything that actually belongs to me. I'll start a new thread when I get started, probably after this weekend once I make sure I have a good hand load developed.

Thanks guys!
Mike

Re: WHERE IS. . .

Wellz, I gathered all my materials tonight. 2x 500w halogen flood lamps. I have one in my cnc mill. "Shot" it w/ my infared temp gun today and its cranking out over 400F with the glass still in place.

So, thinkin that pulling the glass and leaving the roll cage in place will work well.

$9.95 each.

4 sets of xtra bulbs: $4.99ea

Safe from scheels: $89.00

Rheostat 3x: $4.99 ea (xtras for just in case)

Nuts n hardware: $10.00

2x deep fryer thermometer: $7.99ea

Powercords: $ 8.99 ea (2x)

Sheet of insulation: $13.99

I'm under $200.00 for the total investment. Pretty stoked.

Hope I works.

Thanks again. Ceracoat "big boy" kit arrives on Thursday. Woo hoo! I like having it in house now.

Re: WHERE IS. . .

Chad, if I can make one and only one suggestion. GET THE PID CONTROLLER!!

I ran mine for awhile with just a rheostat for temp control and it was awful, had to babysit the oven the whole time to keep checking temperature.

Now with the PID just set it and forget it, all I need to do now is rig up a timer so it shuts itself off.

Oh, and if I can make a second suggestion. Call a local insulation shop and get some good mat insulation. I went through about 4 different types before I found the right stuff. Its 3" thick and good to 1200 degrees, and super insulating.

The insulation screwed to the door actually seals up against the insulation inside the oven, I just put the stove gasket as a backup to seal it off even more. After an hour of baking the door just starts to get warm to the touch, the rest of the outside is room temp.

Re: WHERE IS. . .

Does anyone have an opinion on how these would work with say a load of twenty barrels. How fast would they come up to temperature. I'm going to have to expand my current oven which works great but is slow to come to temperature with a ten+ barrel load.

Thanks

Re: WHERE IS. . .

Dave,

Here's what I did:

Instead of heating elements I went with a pair of 500w halogen flood lamps. $9.99 each. Oven goes to 320F. I've installed 3 thermometers and temps are within 5F of each other once it heats up. Takes about 10m to come to temp.

Basically a big easybake oven. I'm gonna make cupcakes when work is slow.

Dunno how well it'll work yet as we've not used it.

Hope this helps.

Re: WHERE IS. . .

John Benjamin is a barrel maker and EE that has an oven design and a $45 DVD
http://www.artisanideas.com/product.jhtm?id=1211&cid=27
I see him at metal working machinery auctions.

My cousin is the inventor of the coolant proof calipers and EE that has a design for keeping beer cool, and this 42 page thread:

I see him drinking beer at family reunions.

It is amazing how much communication there is over controlling the temperature in a box.

Re: WHERE IS. . .

FWIW, this is a thread that I'd started, when researching an oven build, that leaned towards a 'Toaster oven core'.
researching toaster oven build

But, this is the thread that I'd started, regarding the actual build that we'd done here. And in it is the link for the PID supplier that myself and other here definitely recommend.
this one works fantastic, with an oven element and PID

Not saying either of these are what you were looking for specifically, but hope that it helps.
