I did a search and couldnt find an answer.

Does anyone know where I can find a new bolt assembly for my Remington 700 SA (308)?

I can order one from Remington parts but they are $135 before shipping. Does anyone else make them?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Where to acquire a custom Remington 700 bolt?

Thanks guys.

The PT&G site is down for maintenance.

I found them on midway though, geez those are expensive.

I also called remington, but they wont sell me one...said I had to send my rifle back to the factory for a new one to be "fitted"...

I can only assume they mean head space gauging, which I have a set of.

Re: Where to acquire a custom Remington 700 bolt?

a set of gauges won't set head space on a Remington, it'll need to be machined ( or at least the recoil lug swapped )...

it sounds like you're in over your head and need a gunsmith... most will have a bolt or a source for them, and if you think $135 is expensive for a MAJOR part on your rifle...just sell it now

Re: Where to acquire a custom Remington 700 bolt?

Mostly I am looking to thread on a bolt knob but did not want alter the original bolt.

And what i meant by being able to check the headspace is that I can perform the changes myself. I can measure the headspace and mill down the bolt if I need to. I'm a mechanical engineer, so I can just use the company shop.

I guess I will just buy a PT&G one that is already threaded. Are the M16 extractors failure tolerant? I really dont want to get an extractor in my face.

Wow you read to damn much.......

Send your bolt off to Nate or Dan and have a PTG knob installed.

When your done send it back to Nate or Dan to have a OEM style handle put back on....

I have had one put on then replaced with OEM style by Dan. The threaded was hitting the scope no matter what on my hunting rig so tried to "bend" it.. $100 lesson learned.

There is a guy in Tennessee (David Davis) that will install a knob for about $35. You could get a little pratice making your own knob on the lathe and let him thread the bolt. You don't normally set headspace by changing the bolt geometry but rather the shoulder distance at the barrel threads or chamber depth. Here is his ad.

I got a 700 s/a stock bolt recently from SH member gundoktr, I think he had more....it was reasonable.....if you want one to work on......

the OP doesn't need a bolt, he just thinks he does, in fact him having an extra bolt would be dangerous if he tried to install it himself, or way more expensive than he wants to have a gunsmith install it properly...

at the most he needs a new bolt arm, and to have it installed properly, then he could save his OEM arm for whatever reason...

but it's all silly, just install the damn bolt knob
