I am going to buy a pda Recon and was wondering where I can order one at a good price. I will probably put the NF program on it.

I'm getting several Nomad PDA's for people in the XLR class. Here's the deal. I can package FFS Delta IV, the PDA with GPS, Bluetooth, 1G and WiFI, plus the serial boot for $2220 delivered. Subtract $250 if you don't want Field Firing Solutions on the SD chip.
I've got three sold as of now. If I get two more to commit, it will go down to $2170. I'll need a check or MO, delivery could be as much as 8 weeks out depending on stock at Trimble. I've spec'd green with the PDA keypad, the numeric pad is no charge if you'd rather get that.

No thanks Cory, but thanks for the offer. I don't need the extra features and I think I will stick with the Recon.
Less than $700? For a new one? That is quite a bit cheaper than others I have seen. I don't know if I have the patience though. My mouse clicker finger gets as itchy as my trigger finger at times.

For what your going to use it for it's not worth the $1200 it cost.
There are other choices that have more options like GPS,local weather that cost way less.
The recon is a cheap data collector for survey equipment. It doesn't like cold weather and the screen will bleed and become hard to read in the hot sun. The touch screen screws up all the time also.
So if your going to inverse between points and calc angles than I would say get one but, in the survey world they are basic and cheap.
Basically its like buying a top of the line laptop and only using it as a calculator.

Any PDA. will do what you want, but are not going to be as durable as a Recon (water proof) but how hard on it are you going to be? I have used a cell phone with a ballistic calc and a watch with a built in ballistic calc. and they work just fine in the field, as long as you know how to use it, garbage in garbage out. I would say if it's durability you want and you need a lot of memory and you can afford the $1200 than go with the recon, I just think it's over kill.
I would think an IPhone,Droid or any Pda with GPS and wifi capabilities would be better suited for this application.

I have heard from a surveyor in NZ , that they are basically over priced crap , just donot stand up to field conditions , which is not what I wanted to hear about a so called rugged PDA , thats priced the way it is .

Be advised the Recon has no SD port, make sure whatever software you want to install that an SD port is not required. The FFS delta program only comes on a card.
I am also a land surveyor and the recon will give you issues in the cold and rain, it is all touch screen input compared to at least the Nomad which has numeric keys.
I went the HP 211 PDA route with an enviormental case, works great and the screen is bright and large. with the cost of my program I am into it for around $650 total.

Most people I know are using there cell phones.
There is a member on here that is writing an app for the Android right now, here is the link Shooter it looks very promising.
The IPhone and ITouch are also very good options and have very cheap ballistic app's for them that work pretty good.
You really can't beat the cell phone option, you probably have one already, so there is nothing to buy other than the app, it's got GPS, locale weather, plus it's one less thing to carry to the range or hunting.
The only downfall is, your wife can still get a hold of you at any time.

I would suggest that you just use your phone, but if you want a PDA, I suggest a HP iPAQ 211 or 111. The 211, while larger, has a much nicer screen, and the option of a SD card plus a CF card, but the 111 is more compact, although it only allows a SD card. Another option would be the Palm Tx, but there are more programs available in Pocket PC format than for Palm.

Cell phones huh. Well I am not the most technologically savvy person around, but where do you get the app from? I am with Verizon, not sure if that matters or not. If it is cheap enough I may try it out before getting a pda. Can you save the info for all your different loads on the cell phone app? That is one thing I would definitely like. I am still leaning toward the pda beings I like the NF program so much, but I would like to try the cell phone app.

If your cell phone is based on the Pocket PC platform, NF has the program for Pocket PC. If you need a Palm version, I think NF has that too, though it is not as good as the Pocket PC version. You can get the program from NF.

I have the Verizon Doid and use the Shooter application. It's free and accurate. The creator is member of the hide.

If you want a PDA and not use your phone, just get a refurb or cheapy on gizmos2go and then find an app to work on it.
