i have a south bend heavy 1o lathe. i have everything ready to role except a spider. i need to find some 2.250 outside dimention that i can make one from. if anyone knows a good place to buy metal. i have looked and found some but i would have to do a lot of turning on it.

looking for 2.25 outside and 1.75 inside and 2-3 inches long.

Re: where to buy stainless steel for making my spider

speedymetals.com has been great for me when i need something small that i can't source local.

there is no need to use anything exotic for a spider. certain grades of stainless can be difficult to machine due to work hardening. i think i used 1018 or 1020 dom steel tube for mine. it was what ever i had laying around left over from another project.

edit: here you go from speedymetals: http://speedymetals.com/ps-3503-204-2-14-od-x-250-wall-dom-steel-tube.aspx

I'd stay away from the stainless, like 300 said it comes with its own issues and really is not necessary for what you are going to be doing. Mild steel will do everything you need done and be easier to deal with. Check ebay in the materials/metals section and you should be able to find some drops for cheap.

Re: where to buy stainless steel for making my spider

300 can be a biche if your not used to working with it.

Gummy, loves to work harden, and requires a little different tooling to cut on it well.

BUT there's nothing like experience so I say GO FOR IT.

17/4 ph1150 solution annealed will last you long after the roaches take over!

Good luck.

Re: where to buy stainless steel for making my spider

No one mentioned Aluminum. This is what i used to make mine 15 yrs ago. I used 7075 T6. I have machined well over 100 barrels using it and it has never given me problems.

303 machines well.

304 is gummy crap and 316 is just plain tough.

There's an old machinist adage: 303, she's for me; and 304, she's a whore

Re: where to buy stainless steel for making my spider

I can give you a piece of 1.750" diameter 416R SS if that would work for you. Just drill a center hole and add the holes to the sides. You can always increase the length of the bolts to make up the difference.

Let me know if want it and I will ship you a piece.

Re: where to buy stainless steel for making my spider
