I am considering getting into doing some shooting at long range, and I need to find a place to do it. There is actually another thread here on the main page asking about NW Alabama, but I did not want to hijack their thread.

I'm in Central Alabama, not far from Montgomery. There are two ranges near me that I know of, and both of them are on state management land. They are also only 100 yards. Both of these particular ranges are about an hour away from me.

There is a third, but it is a private club. It has a 300 yard range within it. I have tried and tried to gain acces to this club and become a member, but for some reason they seem h3ll bent on letting many new members join. It seems like a private fraternity. My attempts at trying to join have only left me with a bad taste in my mouth for the club.

I thought about running an ad in the local classifieds or craigslist, just to see if anybody would would respond. If I could find a land owner that would not mind me shooting on their property, this might be an option. I tend to think that I will not get many responses tough (if any at all), because I would assume that most people are not really into letting folks shoot on their land -for liability reasons.

Any advice on what I could do? I'd really like to get into doing some serious shooting, but I don't know if I will be able to without a place to do it. I don't see a point in investing alot of money into a rig if I can't find a place to shoot.

I am from the area. I don't have much family left. I have an uncle living about an hour away and that's about it. I do have my inlaws, but none of them would know of anything really.

I do have an old agriculture FFA teacher from high school that owns some land near us. He does the cattle thing. I'm not sure how much he has, but it would be worth a shot to find out.

Your best bet is to head up to BGTC once a month or so. About once a month they have a small competition or range day open to the public where you can stretch out to 725. Its about an hour from you and not ideal but tis something. Usually during the warmer months there are other small back yard competitions going on. There used to be one in Auburn and then one over in Demopolis that go out to about 1000 yds but I've never made it to any of those.

I know those aren't ideal but there is stuff out there to where you'll be shooting a few times a month.
