You don't. It like a giant scavenger hunt out there looking for powders, looking under every rock, chasing every lead.
It's a rat race

I have had to start substituting powders for Varget. My local gun shop has had IMR 4198 and IMR 4320 on the shelf consistently for the past year. 4198 shoots great with 50gr bullets in .223. The 4320 is right next to Varget on the burn chart and is good for 69gr bullets in .223, both 75 and 87gr bullets in .243 and 168gr in .308.
I have managed to find a couple lbs of Varget lately, but I am still trying to get as much out of these more readily available powders as I can.

I haven't had much issue finding Varget. I have picked up h335, CFE recently. I have always bee able to find H322. Now, this is from a local range close to where i live that not many people seem to know about. My local reloading shop is almost always out. We have a local gun show, called the Indy 1500 gun and knife show that happens like 5 times a year. I have been a little flexible with the powders since I'm new to reloading. I reload 9mm, 223, 30-30, and 243. I just take some my reloading manual with me. Working up loads is kind of fun for me.
Powder was pretty scarce in my local gun store for a while, but they have started to have more on the shelf for the past couple of months. In fact, they got in 30 of the one pound cans of Varget about 6 weeks ago and there were still some on the shelf until just a few days ago. They've had plenty of Retumbo as well and it is still on the shelf. There was a period of time when I was having trouble finding powders I needed, but with a little effort in searching the internet, I was able to find them. At one point, I sucked it up and paid a premium for a few pounds of powder on Gunbroker. I know there are those who wouldn't purchase from the "scalpers" on GB, but if you absolutely must have a certain powder, it is readily available there for about an extra 15 bucks per pound. I can't afford to be a hoarder, but I definitely have put away enough powder to last me for a while, so I'm out of the powder searching business. I suppose that once enough people get a supply of what they need, then the shelves will start to fill up again.
You bookmark all of the potential powder donors aka websites and check them daily.

While we're talking about the various loads and powders they are best used with may I ask what powder is better suited for reloading the 300 Winchester 220 grain? Is there an existing thread somewhere that addresses the various powders, bullets and calibers?
