I Need a new barrel on my 40x 220 swift and everyone that I contacted (GAP, Silen ect ect..) say it'll take about six months before I get my rifle back. I wish I had their "high class" problem, more work than they can handle.
Any suggesions... anyone??

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Did you try Douglas? had my 308 barrel in about a month.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

actually getting the barrel is the easy part and doesn't take that long. The problem is getting a gunsmith to do all the work to install it properly. There are plenty of smiths out there that have been highly recomended but as I stated in my initial post they're all back logged for about 6 months.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

look at bugholes here on the hide.

He keeps ina small stack of obermeyer, rock, and brux barrels.

you might not be able to get 100% of what you want but you can get it in the time it takes you to get him money and him to ship it to you...

Oh yeah my 6.5 barrel should be in Thursday =]

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Have you found a gunsmith that is good near you?You can order a barrel but you will have to have someone put it on.Most gunsmiths have a barrel supplier they deal with and get better prices.Post this in the gunsmith section and I am sure you will get some help.I just read the other day about a guy on here that done some really good work at reasonable prices but I can`t remember his name.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

That's the problem, I don't have a gunsmith near me. There are quite a few that have been highly recomended but the wait is forever. I'll try posting this question in the gunsmith section. I was just hoping there were some folks here that have been through this and could recomend someon that was not only good but quick.

Thanks for all your help...

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

I would suggest seeing what Brownells has in stock for barrel blanks, they usually have a pretty good selection in stock most of the time. As for a gunsmith, do you have a Gander Mountain near you? I have had a couple hunting rifles rebarreled there and the gunsmith at the one back home was a good friend of mine so he built my BR rig for me they don't hire hacks. Maybe not precision rifle specialists, but they all can true an action and install a barrel, and usually they don't take near as long to get the work done as most only send them repairs that amount down to a clean and inspect and maybe a spring or pin or 2.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Contact Marc at Spartan Precision. He's in Concord and a pleasure to do business with.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Just ordered a Krieger yesterday and they said 4 months

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Call benchmark barrels they make and install barrels. 360 652 2594 that way you can order whatever twist and contour you want. they are good to work with and there barrels straight up shoot.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

try brunos shooters supply in az. they have a website.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

A few weeks ago Hart told me 4-5weeks for a barrel.

Gap told me 4-5 weeks to install and chamber it..

But that was about a month ago id say.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

I have a krieger barrel that i waited 16 weeks for them to install on my action, well worth the wait. I have a couple benchmark barreled action that are as accurate as the krieger in half the time.
hope this helps.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

When are you americans going to learn :)

I go to my local gunshop and buy a new matchbarrel for my Sauer 202/SSG3000 over the counter like a box of bullets. The barrel even comes with a factory test target shot in a machine rest. I take the barrel home and install it myself in 20 minutes.

What do you do if you shoot 10-15000 rounds per year? Do you have 3 identical rifles and one of them at any given time is in a queue at a gunsmith?

I could not resist this :)

The only american system i know of that is capable of this is the T/C Contender/Encore.

Try Keith at Arizona Precision.

He's just finishing gunsmith school, so he probably needs the work.

He Ceracoated a bolt of mine, put a new boltknob on it and a new firing pin assembly. His work is top notch.

He just posted pics of a Ruger 10-22 receiver he machined from stock. Superb work.

Shouldn't think he's too busy at the moment, but, looking at the quality of his work, I can't see it staying that way!!

All of the Az shooters I know (including me) are lining up for Keith to do work for them.

He's here on the hide, but I don't have a linky just now.

Keith Johns, Arizona Precision.

Tell him I recommended him.

They said that to me too, took almost 6 to get mine. You'd think 6.5mm barrels would be all the rage and that they would have them in stock, right?

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Brux is about 6-8 weeks as of two weeks ago when I ordered mine.

That is one of the reasons why I love my Savage, with a barrel nut wrench and a headspace gauge I don't need no stinking gunsmith

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Beanland quoted me 6 weeks as of last week. His work is very good according to his customers. He is a specialist in precision builds.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Another vote for Hart Barrels at 4-5 weeks out. Their long standing reputation is without equal.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

I got a Krieger 6mm blank in one week from Bruno Shooters Supply. They stock lots of barrels from Krieger, Hart and Shilen. My rifle is being built by a competent smith that will take 16 weeks, but at least I am not waiting 6 months for a barrel

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

When I decided to rebarrel my rifle, I got on Krieger's site, looked in the inventory list, ordered the barrel and had it in 3 days. The day after I got it in, I took it to my smith (that Saturday). He called me Saturday night and said it was ready. I picked it up Sunday. I guess I just got lucky.

Check out Krieger's inventory list. They do keep a good number of barrels in stock. I will admit that I was in a hurry and had to "settle" for a 1:12 twist rather than the 1:10 I wanted. I went ahead and got the 1:12 because Krieger told me that it would shoot 175s just fine.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

i would also recomend benchmark barrels 360 652 2594 .i am very happy with all of mine .

I inherited a benchrest rifle with a hart barrel, it is probably 30 years old and still shoots like a laser beam. 300 weatherby chambering.

edit: I might know a smith in the sacramento area, he has rebarreled a few rifles for me and they have all shot very well.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Ordered a Kreiger about a month ago and they said it would be in May before I get my barrel. Should be right around the same time my stock is done. When you consider it has been taking months to get scopes/bipods/stock packs/bullets/brass/primers/powder
etc.. , this isn't out of line. Keep checkin the forums, if you can't find what you're looking for with vendors. If you are in a hurry for ANYthing these days, shoot hell out of what you have, relax and enjoy the wait.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

another vote for benchmark barrels
my last one took 6 weeks
plus their 3 groove barrels are shooters

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

My Mcgowen took exactly 6 weeks to get here from the time I ordered it. It's a 30" 260 rem. I'll put it on my savage this weekend.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Another one for Benchmark Barrels. I haven't had a rifle from them yet that would not shoot better than half moa

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Yup, talk to Chris at Benchmark.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

+1 for Hart. Don't think you can go wrong with them; great service, excellent barrels (have one myself), and very experienced people doing the actual rifle work.

Re: where to get a new barrel in less than 6 months?

Just had Broughton build me a 6.5 1/8 Barrel They quoted me 2 to 3 months and delivered in 3 weeks flat!
