Re: where to get pillars

There are some beautiful ones in Greece....

Wait, wrong pillars.

+1 for make 'em.

Re: where to get pillars

I have two sets laying around somewhere that came with my Badger DBM. If they will fit your stock you can have a set if you cover the shipping.

Re: where to get pillars

People tell me that G10 pillar material is better for bonding and strength per weight, but I have not tried it:

I have tried brass, but it has dissimilar metal problems.
I have tried stainless, but it does not machine as nicely.
I am back to 1010 steel tubing, it is how I like to pillar:

I rough up the outside of the pillar to grip the epoxy ala Wagner:

I cut the pillars and fit them to the action outside the stock. Mosin Nagants with a Timney trigger need a notched rear pillar.
I lightly chamfer the cut pillar.
I tap the pillar hole in the stock with a threading tap so the epoxy gets a grip.
I have reduced diameter action screws for pre compressing the pillar as the epoxy sets up.
I wrap the screw with masking tape to keep the screw centered in the pillar as the epoxy sets up.

For different types of rifles, I make a sketch of the pillar bedding job, so next time I do one, it will go faster.

I you have to make custom washers, label them well, so you don't have to make custom washers again... what a pain, cutting down washers.

Most people who install pillars do not understand the real purpose of pillars, so used rifles usually need to have the pillars drilled out and done right.

Re: where to get pillars

thanks guys, i don't have the tools available to make them so i have to order them. But can someone help explain how to bed the pillars. I have read the whole thread above about how to bed the action but i get confused when it comes to the pillar part of the bedding project. It seems like when i bed it the pillars are permanently attached to my stock am i right or do i wrap them in tape and wax them so they come out with my action?

Re: where to get pillars

erniethegunsmith.com has an excellent set of instructions on pillar beddin, as well as pillars for the 700, and pillar materials. I have use him several times, and I use his process, along with some of the procedures from some of the other bedding articles on the net..

Happy Shooting
