Which 7mm for new Berger 195?

I've had my heart set on a .284 Win for a while now as my next build. Now the hint of the new Berger 195 Hybrid is throwing a wrench into my well laid plans. I'm going to get in on the Stiller group buy and now I can't decide to go with a mag bolt face or the standard bolt for the .284 Win. I like the barrel life of the .284 Win, but I need to be able to push the 195 to around 2800 for what I want, which is the ability to remain super sonic to 1 mile. Should not be a problem at my altitude at 2800 if the BC of the new 195 is even close to the forecast. If I could push the 195 to 2800 with the .284 Win and a 30" tube then I would like to avoid the Magnums. If I can't get there with the .284 Win, then I would lean towards the 7 RmMag or 7 SAUM and just suck it up when the barrel goes south earlier than I would like. I will be shooting steel to 1 mile, slow fire, so I'm not sure what barrel life would look like, but I'm guessing in the 1500 rnds range. What do you all think?

I would go magnum. I shoot a 7mag which pushes a 168 Berger at a modest 2930 fps with 69 gr Retumbo, but you could easily push a 180 VLD to 3000 if you wanted. A 7wsm would also be a great option to push the new Berger, and if your feeling like really reaching out there go 7 STW. What a lot of guys forget to mention when telling how they're pushing a large grain round such as the 180 Berger with a 284 win and 30" tube to 2900 and up, is that the brass won't hold a primer after 2-3 firings.

I agree with the above poster, go magnum or short magnum top get the most out of the bullet, anything else won't push it out very fast and will have a lot of bullet drop

The new Berger is going to be longer than the 180 by roughly 0.100 inch (1.645 or so from my memory). That will make running it out of a short magazine even more problematic than a Berger 180 VLD (1.543" +/- on my last lot). If you are going to take advantage of the BC that they will hopefully bring to the table, you'll need a long action to make it work. Assuming that you'll go regular Mag length (3.65") then you'll not have any problems reaching 2,800 fps with the Rem Mag or WSMs. Depending upon barrel length, the SAUM is probably going to get you to your goal of 2,800 fps; I am skeptical on the .284, but its possible the .284 Shehane can do it, but we'll see how it goes. We are talking 8.33% increase in mass over the Berger 180. My brother could get 2,850 from his Berger 180s without pressure. To get 2,900 consistently with the Berger 180s, he needed to step up to the .284 Shehane.

Lots of folks are shooting the Matrix 190s, and their input would be instructive. I know the difference in my 7WSM to shoot the Matrix 190 (or Cauterucio 189) is a noticeable increase in pressure to run them close to matching velocities in my rigs.

Barrel life is what it is. I have been shooting a true 7WSM for a long time now, and have toasted 4 or possibly 5 barrels in my two rifles (F-Class does eat barrels like a tasty snack). If you want to play with the new bullets it seems you have to be willing to pay to do so.
