Hey guys, im interested in a semi auto rifle. I have acouple bolt actions and I wanted a 1911 but as long as I live at home thats not gonna happen. Anyway I was looking at mini 14s. I like the mini 14 ranch and tactical. I wouldnt mind just haveing the ranch if I can get a 20 round mag for it. I dont need a rifle to shoot 1 inch groups or anything but i dont want something that groups 4-5 inches at 100. If i got the ruger mini 14 I would probably put a scope on it and I would target shoot and maybe hunt alittle with it. but its more or less gonna be a target / plinking rifle.I dont want to spend more than 700 total. I know thats low for a semi auto. Thanks for the help.

Re: Which accurate ar?

I would keep my eyes open for an AR, because the market is flooded with them and tax time is around the corner. You maybe able to find one in your price range. I haven't seen to may mini 14's that shoot good.

Ok, good is a relative term. Are we talking over 2 inch groups at 100?

Re: Which accurate ar?

2 MOA is good for a mini 14. I have 2 of them and they are fun. If you buy a Lower reciever for an AR and parts kit, then wait for a complete upper to go on sale you could do around $700. Mini's may shoot around 2-3 MOA with a scope but after 6 rounds the barrel gets fairly warm and the groups get even bigger. Check out CDNN investments, they usually have great deals on new complete AR's with free shipping. Not sure if $700 will get it done though. They also have good deals on Mini's.

Re: Which accurate ar?

You could probably find something used for that price. That or build one, I built one with stag lower (100bucks) stag 16" upper (500) dpms parts kit (50) and tapco stock (50something). It's a great plinker, I shot it for a long time with the open sights it came with, now I have a vortex red dot on it.

edit: this stag upper here, was 499 when I bought it 2 years back

also check carolinashootersforum.com I hear it's a decent site for NC and SC gun owners.

Re: Which accurate ar?

you can find brand new dpms oracles all day long for under 700. every once in a while you'll see BNIB carbon bushmasters ar15 for $650 at cabelas.

if you're looking to shoot 7.62x39 and happy with 4-5" groups, find an AK. they can be had for under $500.

I like the oracle, I live in NC and I heard something about 16inch rifle being class 2 or 3? is that true?

Re: Which accurate ar?

Oh, and I had looked up reloading cost for the 223. I figured I could reload around20-30 cent a shot for cheap stuff I didnt look up match componentes. Is reloading 556 any different?

Re: Which accurate ar?

Reloading 223/556 is virtually the same thing, just different pressures in 223 ( usually lower due to a tighter chamber). Doublestar is >>>OK<<<< but not great, will be about as accurate as a mini, pretty much cheap parts.Hate to burst your bubble but especially with a semi you truly get what you pay for.If you just wanna plink and hose targets with your buds while laughing and grabbing ass get any semi, buy 1k of cheap shit ammo and have some.If you actually plan on target shooting contructively you'll have to spend about 1k new or maybe pick up something used thats based on a quality rig...
Just saying...

Re: Which accurate ar?

If you just want a blaster carbine that doublestar is fine.

I would really look around used, you might be able to find that same rifle for 500 bucks who knows.

Check around online forums for complete rifles as well as used uppers and lowers and you will find a deal.

Yeah, I could do that.

I already have a 700 for target shooting. I just wanted something alittle more fun to shoot but I might want to shoot some steel 300 and under with it.

Thanks for the help guys. I might just see if I cant find a cheap mini 14 for now.

If I want more of a target ar I will get one when I have the money to spend.

Re: Which accurate ar?

Exhogflyer is right, you get what you pay for. If you just want to plink a semi auto for cheap, just get a AK. Some of them can be freaks of nature and be accurate. My MAK 90 shoots 2-3 inch groups at 100 and I'm a horrible shot. Not great compared to a AR but pretty good for an AK.

Cheap and quality aren't usually used in the same sentence. If you absolutely have to have an AR-15, you're gonna have to hunt for a used one for your budget. Don't be a cheapass and spend a little more for a better gun. Just put aside $20-$50 for a few more months.

Re: Which accurate ar?

Yeah I was just thinking about it. 600-700 is alot for a rifle that is pretty much an AK.

I might splurge and get the 16inch panther in 223. 700 for the rifle and I might put a used supersniper on it.

Thanks for the help.
