Which Barrel manufacturer? 338LM

Frank from Bartlein said" Grizzly Industrial is stocking a .338 barrel. It's the MTU contour at 28" finish / 29" blank, 5R, 1-9.5 twist. " MTU contour???

I'm thinking 28'' is about right?

I currently have selected this barrel:

I'm wondering if I'm making the correct choice as I doubt this barrel will be fluted like I want. I'm guessing I could get flutes done to it but I'd rather by a barrel with it already done. Does anyone have experance with THIS barrel?

What's another manufacturer that also makes barrels that are just as good as bart? Would Hart barrels or Krieger be a good choice?

I have a Krieger 28" on my 338 Lapua. I have a couple of Bartlein barrels from Grizzly. They are very good barrels. You will be very happy with it. It will make a heavy rifle, with the AMU contour. But that helps cut down on recoil. I have mine on a Stiller Tac338 action, in a McMillan A-5 stock, with a Thunderbeast suppressor. Very pleasant to shoot.

As far as barrel Bartleins are some of the, if not the best barrels around. I would encourage the fluting, it should save around 1-1.5 lbs on that long of a barrel.

IMO flutes are a waist of money. It will shave maybe 1 pound off a rifle that will probably still weigh 15 pounds fully loaded. Bartlien is the best money can buy. Even if you buy the barrel and decide not to use it you will not lose much if any money when selling it. If you wait a year or two you could probably make money selling it as it seems like everything gun related goes up 5-15% a year.

good glad I'm making a good choice. What does the 5R mean? it says 338 5R on caliber . . .

I plan to do spiral flutes OD green barrel and black flutes. or maybe a German fleck pattern on the flutes. we will see

I just want something a little different

5R is a style of rifling. It's a radius land and the grooves are proportional to each other. Its hard for me to explain, just google 5r rifling and it will tell you everything you need to know.

5R rifling doesnt make a difference to me because Kriegers have always been traditional 4 groove and they too are some of the best barrels on the face of the earth, as well are Brux. Mine us a Brux traditional 4 groove and it stacks them on top of each other up close and at distance

RogueHK, We can flute if you want. Yes it will save some weight, does nothing for accuracy in my opinion.

Pusher591, 5R. The "R" does not stand for radius. There is an angle on each side of the land. The "R" stands for Russian.

Krieger doesn't do 4 groove in .338. There standard was a 6 groove and now they offer 5R in the .338 cal.

The number of grooves I tell guys has no real bearing on accuracy.

I do believe though that an odd groove barrel like the 5 groove with the angle on the sides of the lands will help distort/upset the bullet jacket less when it makes the jump into the rifling and with some of the thinner style match jacket bullets etc....I do believe that it does help with bullet failure.

Learn something new everyday, thanks Frank. I forgot we were discussing caliber in .338, I was thinking 4 groove because of my 308 I spoke of.

I didn't mean that the R stands for radius but was trying to explain the "edge" of the land was rounded off compared to traditional style rifling offered by Krieger and Brux.
