I'm going to be purchasing a brake for my 20" 308 barrel and eventually for a 24" 260 barrel. I have pretty good idea of what I want (preferably 5/8-24), but I'd like to hear the opinions of the experienced, knuckle dragging, trigger pullers of The Hide.

-Please rate based on-

1.) Recoil abatement/effectiveness
2.) Quality of available brake-attach suppressor and the attachment method (if applicable)
3.) Looks and the ability to swap between barrels easily

It will be used on my Accuracy International AT for competitions and right now I only have the 308 barrel but will be buying a 260 barrel soon. I don't have any immediate plans to purchase a suppressor (I currently live in Illinois anyway) but down the road that may be a possibility so I'd like to be able to just attach it to the brake. My main concern now is just the effectiveness of the brake for recoil reduction.

I intentionally left off the Badger FTE (standard size) brake since I think they are hideous and too large, just like the AI brakes. Also, if there is a brake I didn't list post it below!

Thank you!!

Google: Brakes, Snipers Hide. Read for days. Like asking who makes the best beer.

Schuler or ThunderBeast CB are my choices.

Schuler, good, cheap, good service.

TB - fits their very nice suppressors.

I have read quite a few of the threads regarding brakes and I've gotten a lot of good info. I know I'm not the first to ask the question, but I wanted to do the poll with a lot of choices and see where it goes.

For taking out the flash signature the AAC will most likely dominate anything out there. Add that it will fit both aac and saker can setups but understand that there are better silencer mounts out there. But for recoil reduction you could be served by surefire.

I voted for the Surefire SOCOM. Really reduces the flash signature, muzzle rise and felt recoil but can be a real PITA to index properly.

The Surefire is what I'm leaning towards and I'll probably have my smith index it for me when he threads the barrel.

I like the AI brakes. They're super effective and when a barrel is toast I can pay an extra $60 to get the factory threaded barrel vs sending it out and waiting and paying $100-125 for a thread and time job.

Somebody should do some empirical testing on this issue. You could put an accelerometer on the rifle. It'd also be interesting if you could somehow measure back blast and pressure, even noise.

It sounds like a job for mythbusters or something, but there's no reason this has to be a subjective decision unless you're primarily concerned with looks.

Buy the brake based on the suppressor you want. I hate brakes, and would rather shoot without one if I can't use a suppressor. The extreme noise and blast bothers me much more than recoil. If it was me I'd save the money, especially on a 308 or 260, and put it towards a direct thread can ASAP.

Can't own suppressors in Illinois.

I have Little Bastard on a 6.5 CM and a Little Jimmy on a 6 XC made by APA. On a 308 it has AI brake, the least effective of the 3 brake I own. If AI didn't thread with a shoulder I would swap brake. if I would rethread I would lose close to 1" in barrel length.

My smith just put mine on my new 6 Creed and pointed out in timed perfect from get go and it will likely never happen again for him on any break

So I just discovered the JEC Quick-Brake and I think I'm set on it. Supposed to be excellent for recoil reduction, you can screw a cap over the ports to basically turn it off if need be and it will work with Templar suppressors.

Anyone have any experience with these?

APA Little Bastard tames my 300 win mag amazingly well. Krieger turned it down flush so I can't even tell where the seam is. Even with the heavy 210s, it seems to shoot lighter than my .308 gas gun.

I have used a lot of different brakes out there. The JEC brakes are far and away the best competition brakes out there in my opinion. I run their standard one currently and will never use anything else.

Recoil Reduction / Muzzle Brakes

I haven't really used too many different muzzle brakes however the SureFire brake I have on my 20" .300 WinMag is fantastic. Causes a night and day difference in recoil, however it is quite loud and the guys at the range always bitch but to hell with them i'm not swapping it out.
