Ive been using 168 grain .308 black hills ammo out of my rem 700 at the range for target practice, Im saving up to do a rem 700 long range rifle build. Im going hunting for the first time in november and Im wondering which bullet to use on deer, the A-max, barnes triple shock or the match hollow point? I dont want to switch round manufacturers becuase I heard that once you fire one brand out of your rifle you should keep using it. So which bullet would be good on deer? thanks

Eeeesh- in before the sh*tstorm....

You'll get a lot of feedback on match vs. hunting bullets on game, do a search. Check out "Top 20 threads" thread for some links. Sierra says not to, I don't. Others do.

Re: which bullet tip is better

Personally, I'd go with the bullet that's designed for hunting, but the only one you mention is the Triple Shock, and I'm not experienced with them.

The friendliest advice I can give you is to keep it simple, and let the ammo manufacturers do the heavy lifting for you. Hunting ammo is their bread and butter, and they do OK by their customers. Read the box, trust what it says, and do the 'Greetings Pilgrim, your search is ended..."-two-step.

Developing hunting loads is a major case of reinventing the wheel.

If the stuff that Fed, Rem, and Win are offering aren't good enough; you must be doing your hunting off-planet.

Well, like I said, Ive heard that you should only shoot match grade ammo out of a rifle that you want to compete with, which this one is for now until I build a really good long range rifle. Thats why I asked. Ive only shot black hills ammo out of it. I dont reload yet, but Im looking into it, hopefully I'll start reloading by the new year. Im actually going over my friends house next weekend and hes been reloading for years.

My girlfriend shot her pig this year with the 168 grain Barnes TSX match hollow point and that pig didn't go anywhere. It was pretty accurate as well. I was shooting ground squirrels with them and easily making head shots out to 200 yards. Didn't get any shots farther than that though.

I've heard a lot of "I've heard's.." in my life, but I've never heard that one. I have no idea who told you that or why, but I'm pretty sure your match rifle will be perfectly OK shooting any ammo that's within SAMMI pressure specs. I have heard of some people attributing accuracy issues to mixing powders and copper in the barrel, but a good cleaning should take care of that. Not sure what to think about that one...

POI difference? That's a different question. You'll need to re-zero and develop new dope for the new load, whatever it is.

Re: which bullet tip is better

ninehotel, all I asked, basically, is which bullet wont blow right through the deer and have it run away dying a slow miserable death. Also, that topic you wanted me to look at didnt answer my question, but I understand why you posted it.

jrob300, I dont remember who told me that, it was awhile ago. What I meant to type was that you should only shoot match ammo out of your rifle, not the cheap crap. Sorry for typing it wrong.

Thanks for the info fellas

Re: which bullet tip is better

Here is my .02 and take it for its worth. Just about any high speed projectile placed in the vital area on game will probably kill it. With that being said when hunting I use a bullet constructed for hunting. When I am target shooting then I will use a target round and I will expect differences. If this Remmy 700 is your shooter for now then why not test lots of different ammo to see what it likes and then when you finish your L/R piece you can get picky. In a nutshell shoot it all and let the rifle dictate to you what it prefers to eat. If your confident that a match bullet will help you harvest your deer then use it ( I personally would not). If your rifle prefers a Winchester Silver Ballistic tip and your confident it will do the job then use it or whatever else suits you and your rifle. It is yours after all and everyones opinion will vary. This one is mine.

echo that

that's the bullet I use for my 308 for deer and hog hunting
I like Barnes but they are not needed for whitetails

see if Blackhills loads that bullet, go for it
if not, Federal does and it should be fairly close to the 168 match you are running

you would most likely have to do minor scope adjustments

Re: which bullet tip is better

Another opinion.

I have killed deer before with SMK's. Like others have said, in the boiler room and it will not go too far.

I prefer TSX's for hunting though. They have great performance.

Good luck.

Re: which bullet tip is better

I don't think that it really matters what bullet. Dead is dead with the right shot. But with cross shoulder shots you need something that will not blow-up on bone. I like Horandy SST or Nosler ballistic tips.

I am going to try Berger but I am having a hard time finding a local dealer that has the calibers that I am looking for.

Email Berger bullets and ask for the Promo Video, it is impressive and the first hunt on a Elk is my cousin Lynn.
