+1 7mm-08 if elk are in the equation. Bullet selection is key for them too.

The thing is i may never get to go elk hunting but if i do i want to make sure i have a gun to do the job. It will mainly be a long range tactical gun as well as a whitetail and yote gun.

my vote would be 7mm best for elk ,243 best for deer and targets
260 best all around . i just built a rifle for the same reasons and considered the same cals . but went with the 6.5 creedmoor

180 Bergers like 2800 to 2850. The 168 2950. The barrel life is exceptional thats why I use it for f-class way better on barrels than a 6.5-284. I also have a hunting rifle built in .284. Easy to tune decent recoil and great performance.

Love it ...but suprised Mr 7mm didnt recommend the 7 08. Have had all 3 with the exception of the 260, lately Im really liking my 243. However, it has the standard "slower" twist factory barrel. But if you go with the right twist you can achieve what your looking for. Check here there are many threads on the 260 and 243 as well as close relatives.

I know its not on your list but I'm particular to 7mm WSM. More
power for hunting, great long range performance. I was going to build a 243 AI for comps like ASC but after seeing the difficulty
we had spotting misses with the 6mms compared to the plume of dirt a 180 gr 7mm throws up, it was a deciding factor. Of course
never missing wins....but I'm just not that good yet.

If you build a Savage you could do all 3...

If your building a rifle that will be 90-95% Target/Tactical then go with the .260.
If you did more hunting then 7-08, now your looking into the 284, but I'd stay with the .260 as it will be easier to load for and use less powder. And most of your shooting will be in the 300yrd range anyhow.

That is what i may end up doing.

You can build a switchbarrel on many different platforms.

SPC Sherri Gallagher 1st place National Champion at Camp Perry 2009 Long Range Aggregate. Little 'Ol 260! IMHO the perfect caliber. Perfect combination of low recoil/high energy, flat shooting, inherently accurate, easy on the wallet when it comes to brass, powder, and pills. Just finished up converting 300-243 brass tonight-free brass by the way.

    OK you 7mm guys...fire away! :)
    Switch barrel is good!

    Re: Which cal 260-- 243-- 7-08?

The main purpose of the cal im wanting to get is going to be a 1k tactical gun as well as a whitetail type deer. The elk hunt may or maynot happen.

    I'm thinking 260 Remington then.

I shoot at known-distances. All I really care about is wind.

    A 115gr 6mm DTAC @ 3000fps drifts similar to a 139gr 6.5mm Scenar @ 2800fps.

Similar amount of powder, similar cost for brass and bullets.

The 260 Remington should have better barrel-life.

The 7mm-08 with RL17 and 162gr AMAX MIGHT be right in there too. I really don't know what it can do.

    Re: Which cal 260-- 243-- 7-08?

Now, stick that 30"custom barrel into that trued Remington 260 action, now insert that custom barreled action into a MAK chasis, have a nice 4 oz. trigger installed, top it off with some fine glass, and feed it a steady diet of 139 Scenars. You are now ready to get serious!

    Good shooting,
