Just planning a head and would like to get things figured out in my mind.

I have a Winchester model 70 pre 64 in. 270 and I am planning on having it rebarreled in the next 12 months.

I want to go with something .30 caliber or smaller and I will be having the barrel cut th 16.25".

I will be using this rifle from short range out to about 700 yards.

The bolt face is the same for the. 308 family as the 30-06 family so I would like to stay with one of these families. I read the sticky on caliber selection and am still unsure due to barrel length and having a long action.

Any advice is welcome

Thanks

The main reason for it being so short is because my suppressor is 28oz and I would like to keep it somewhat manageable. I might go as long as 18" but that would be max

Why not 284 Win given its a long action... Don't need to get those high BC 7mm bullets going too fast to go a long way accurately.

You can't get too small a bore given short length. Powder has got to find some cubic inches to burn in...

If you've got a pre-64 Win 70 in factory configuration, don't cut it up to make a precision rifle. Just buy a Remington or one of the other great actions out there. The Win is not a great rifle for this sport anyway, and you're destroying the collectable value of it.

If its already been molested, disregard this.

Hmmm I will look at the. 284

As for it being a collectable, unfortunately it was tapped and has a side mount scope mount as well as most of the blueing off the barrel. Overall the gun has been hunted with since 1955 and is showing her age. I figured if I can make the barrel last as long as possible and then rebarrel it and keep on using it.
