I'm getting either a Savage 12FV, or a 10 Precision Carbine here in a little bit, and I was wondering whether I should get a .223, or a .308. I only hunt here in Texas, and the biggest thing we have on the place that we hunt on is humongous pigs.

AMEN!! I have shot .223 and .308 forever. I wish I would have gone to the .243 a LONG LONG LONG TIME AGO!! If you ever went that route, you would understand what I am talkin about!!

Re: Which caliber is better?

I'd say 223. It's gonna be able to take down a pig quite easily and if it's your only rig then it will be a lot cheaper to shoot. That being said There are other rifles out there and are several other calibers in between that may do you better

Re: Which caliber is better?

My vote is 22-250. Anything the .223 does, the 22-250 does it better, at the same price (unless you reload, uses little more powder then)
Even with low BC varmint bullets mine will shoot steel with anything else out to 800, haven't tried any further. And crows tend to vaporize in a puff of feathers when hit...hehe

I got rid of my .308 after it sat in the safe for almost two years. I just love shooting my 22-250 so much.

1+. A 308 should be able to stretch out a bit more. If you go with the 223, then I would go with a gas gun, with afaster twist rate barrel, IMHO.

Re: Which caliber is better?

Yeah I think I'm going to go with a .308. The .223 is good but it seems just a little to small if I wanted to shoot something big or go shoot long range. Thanks for all the input though!

Re: Which caliber is better?

Big isn't always better for long range. Check out the ballistics, a 22-250 is flatter than a 308, even out to 1000 yards. My load stays supersonic out to 950. Unless you plan on hunting at that range...steel makes the same noise no matter what you hit it with.

Re: Which caliber is better?

i would like to see .223 penetrate the skull of a large Texas hog 100% of the time. of those 2, stick with the .308 imho

i havnt hunted in my home state of Texas in a while, but isnt it illegal to hunt whitetail with .223? i know a few states have a .243 minimum

Re: Which caliber is better?

223 is legal in Tx for WT deer.

Not sure about the 22-250 that vaporizes a crow. IMO, if the bullet will vaporize a crow, maybe it is a bullet choice issue but that is too explosive for WT, and damn sure pigs.

223 can kill pigs sure, and ALOT of people down here do it. However, use an AR not a bolt gun. It will not drop them in their tracks all of the time as everyone on the internet can do. You will need quick follow up shots for those times. I would use TSX's in 223 for pigs.

I used a 22-250 for white tails and it dropped it right through the chest with some factory soft points I had laying around. I was hoping to get some reloads done before season but my bullets were on backorder.

But I like the decision you made on the .308. It is a very versatile round and there are so many options for bullets (both reloading and factory). Heck, I was using my .300 win mag for woodchucks this spring, so don't worry about overkill haha.
