I have a stainless 1911 that I would like to have finished. Are any of the commercial finish products (Cerakote, Birdsong Black T, etc.) better suited for application on a stainless pistol?
Used DuraHeat on a stainless slide (knowing it should have been bead-blasted to make it adhere better) and even though two coats went on it has worn thru/off under hard use. Other blued/parkerized weapons it stayed put just fine. http://www.duracoat-firearm-finishes.com/
Krylon is not worth the time/effort in my experience. It wears off under hard use and cleaning solvents although for anti-corrosion it did Ok but not as well as the dedicated finishes.
(I've seen Perma-kote on Nighthawks do well but dont have direct experience)
Would recommend you talk with the relevant business direct to get their take.
Re: Which commercial finish on a stainless pistol?
If you want it in black then you may want to take a close look at ionbond. Doing a two tone with the slide in diamond black ionbond and the frame in a cerakote color of choice makes for an awesome combination.
Here is one that is Ionbond and Milspec Green Cerakote.

I just had Lynn@ Carolina Mountain Tactical do my Colt Defender in Cerakote. We did the lower and part of the slide in black and left the sides of the slide in polished stainless. Turned out very nice.
