It will be used for long range hunting and shooting. I just don't know which kestrel is what I need. I don't think I need top of the line one but don't want bottom of the line. Was thinking 3000, 3500 and 4000.

Now I came across brand new kestrel 3500 for 160 right now and thought it was a good price. What's your thoughts?

The 4000 and 4500 will give you density altitude without further calculations. This is the number that tells you the air's resistance to the bullet's flight. You might take a look at the thread KestrelAB versus FFS/Nomad.

The problem is i cant afford a 4500 series as they start around the 350-600 dollar mark and that's just more then i can dish out at the moment. So its out of the question for me unfortunately. Thats why when i came across the 3500 for 160 dollars i thought i would be crazy to pass on it so i figured id ask everyones thoughts before i go ahead a purchase?

Matt_3479, tell us what you are trying to accomplish. If you just want wind velocity, any Kestrel will do. If you want data for a ballistic app. or program then you need to know what data you need to produce a solution.

Edit: I looked at the data produced by the 3500 and it gives the info to resolve a solution with the exception of compass bearing and angle of the shot. You can actually get most of the info from some of the Casio watches but then you still need a wind meter.

2500 if you don't mind calculating DA yourself, or don't have a ballistics calculator that reads DA. It will give you windspeed, baro pressure, altitude (if calibrated), and temp. Hits all of the main points you need.

I started off with the 2500, and now use a 4000 that reads DA simply because I can print out an easy to follow, 1-page sheet that has dope for just about every environmental condition I'm likely to encounter. Similar to the FDAC slider or Accuracy 1st whiz wheel, but about $40-70 cheaper :) Just takes a bit of figuring and playing with numbers.

If you can get the 3500 for cheap go for it. I have and use a 2500, it takes me all of 5-10 seconds to cross reference the temp and altitude to my FDAC for DA. Also I have the same CR2032 battery that came with the unit back in 2012, never have to worry about leaving them dead and the batteries destroying the unit. The 3500 also uses a button battery.
