For field tactical, which reticle would you recommend? NP-R1, NP-R2, Mil-Dot? This would be for a Nightforce 3.5-15 x 50. Various unknown distances up to 1000 yards, shooting a .308.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

Whatever you do you are going to want your adj and reticle to match. I have the NP-R2 and really like it. I think I would like the NP-R1 even better. The NP-R2 is just a little more spaced out and makes holding your wind a little harder (For me). If you do the Mil system I would go with MLR over Mil-Dot.

Hope this helped,

Rhett

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

IMO, the 2 most functional reticles are the MLR and the NP-R1. If you prefer mils, run the MLR. If you prefer MOA, run the NP-R1. The spacing on the horizontal NP-R2 reticle is 5 MOA, so it's a little more difficult for precise lead and wind holdovers. The NP-R1 has 2 MOA spacing, and is more useful. I have both NP-R1 and NP-R2 recticles, and prefer the NP-R1.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

I use a laser range finder for determining distances, so I never went the Mil route. I have the NP-R1 on my NXS and would recommend it.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

NPR1 all the way. It is the finest grade in my oppinion. Holds are easy with it and it is great for calling shots. And if you range with it it is great. So again NPR1. You can't go wrong.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

I was thinking the NP-R1 had some many hash marks, that it would be distracting. However looks like people are not bothered by that.

If you are shooting unknown distances w/o a rangefinder, what is the best way to judge? Trained eye? With the scope?

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

I have the Mil dot reticle and love it! If you are going to use a mil dot reticle, the NF mil reticle is the way to go. Get matching turrets either way you go and you will be very happy!

Good Luck

Ranging formulas with your reticle. If you know the size of your target you can work out a formula to get the distance. It will take practice to get accurate with it. Here are some of the formulas.

Mil ranging formula.

Distance to Target(Yards) = Height of Target (Inches)Image Size(mils) * 27.77

MOA ranging formula

Distance to Target(Meters) = Height of Target (inches)Image Size(MOA) * 87.3

The shooter ready simulation is very interesting, a great way to learn before you are out on a range.

I am down to the NP-R1 or MLR. Thinking of the NP--R1 because the hash marks seem more intuitive as they are different sizes, not sure though.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

If you're an MOA shooter (as in, you have other scopes and/or shooting buddy calling MOA) then go with the NP-R1

If you work in mils, then go with the MLR. It makes little difference if you're a MOA or MIL shooter, just that you keep the turrets and the reticle and the spotter all matching.

I had an MLR that I really liked, but my other 2 NF's and my match partner's NF are all NP-R1's. When shooting the MLR I'd have to take his call and convert it, making the second shot slow. I traded out to a guy who had the same situation as me, but was looking for an MLR instead of an NP-R1.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

c1steve, you should decide whether you want to work with mils or moa first then pick a reticle and turret combination that match (mil/mil or moa/moa). Personally I prefer mil because that's what I'm accustomed to. Do some research into both so that you have an idea of how to use them for ranging, hold over’s, wind holds etc. If I was picking it would definitely be the MLR with 0.1 mil adjustments.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

Well I have been doing my homework, and realize the FFP would make life much easier. Also FFP scopes seem to be MIL, not moa. Mathematically I can do either, but it looks like it will be mil (today).

Absolutely on the 2 combos you mentioned. But yes and no on the inch/cm thinking. Remember, mils are not metric. If you are shooting at 500 yds, the adjustments are not 0.5 cm; that only holds true if you are shooting at 500 meters.

10 power could work fine at 1000 if your targets are big enough, say 40 inches or so. It is all about the size of the target. Plus, the perceived magnification effect is more pronounced at greater distances. For example, I shoot at 200 yds at around 18x, but at 500, 8x is more than enough on a 15" target.

Re: Which NF reticle for up to 1000 yard

The MOA range formula above can be more simple. Target size in inches/ by MOA X 100. is your range in yards. Very simple. So I would say NPR1. Thats the way I went and I love it. In the words of tony the tiger. Theyr'e Greeeaaaattt!!!

Umm, no. That's the formula for an IPHY (Inch Per Hundred Yard) reticle, which is about 5 percent off from a MOA reticle.

Here are the correct formulas:

Yup, the MOA formula is easy, but Robert had it upside down.

Inches X 100 (or 95.5 for more precision) / MOAs

I have two NXS's with NP-R1 & one NXS with the NP-R2 reticle both are great, out to 1K I think both work very well.
