I have it narrowed down to 5.5x22 or the 8x32. I am gonna get an NXS with either NPR1 or NPR2 reticle. It goes on a 308. I thought about the 12x42 but it lacks elevation adjustment I think.

Re: Which nightforce magnification for F class?

I have used both...

The 32X gives you such a small field of view at 600 yards, that all you see is the target. If thats what you want, then it fits the bill. I usually dial it down to 24X so I can see the number board. The nice thing about the 8-32 is I can set it at 24X(ish) for the 800 yard, and 32X for the 1000 yard. Doing this makes the field of view almost identical. If you have a lot of Mirage, you wont be using 32X.

I would recommend the NPR1 since its more precise when you are shooting at 1 MOA targets.

I have the 8-32 on the 300 Mag, and the 22X on the 308. I have never wished that I had more magnification on the 308. Its very sharp. Keep in mind the magnification on the 32X is nice to have, but I still hit the target with 22X.

For F class, 600 yards and under go 5.5-22x, for out to 1000yds, go 8-32x. Either way, the NP-R1 reticle. It is by far my favorite reticle.

Re: Which nightforce magnification for F class?

I use a (albeit far cheaper) 6-24X42 scope, and find that as distances extend, mirage requires the magnification to be lowered from the peak available mags.

At 1000yd, a day with heavy mirage seldom allows sufficient target clarity above 18x, but at 200yd, the full 24x capability is useable.

Mirage is a great equalizer. It makes expensive scopes perform to standards which can often be met as well by cheaper optics. Money speaks, but mirage speaks as loud or louder.

Don't forget the Bench Rest scopes made by NightForce. I have seen them on a lot of F-Class rifles. They are both powerful and precise (1/8 MOA Knobs). That is if this rifle will be for F-Class exculsively. Otherwise go with the NXS series scopes.

Since you don't need rangefinding capability why the clutter? Perhaps, a CH-2 reticle would be best. At power, the reticle's dot subtends about .2 MOA. That's about 2 inches at 1000.

Re: Which nightforce magnification for F class?

Some use the clutter for precise hold offs guided by the scoring disc.

I use a fixed 32x scope on my F-TR rig and have never shot anywhere that I had trouble seeing the target number and the target, but my experience is limited. I have used an 8.5-25x scope on a few occasions and never thought I "needed" more power.

I believe either of those NXS choices would be fine for F-class.

Nicely put!!! And true!

I use the 5.5-22 NF scopes, and they are plenty for any shooting at any distance. The 32X would give you more magnification, but how much do you really need. You will find that you will need to dial down when the mirage picks up. Then the 32X is overkill. My vote is 22X.

Interesting. At the LR club where I shoot in Houston, the F-class scope of choice is the Nightforce 12-42X. I use a fixed 36X myself, because of weight restrictions. I have never longed for less magnification and I compete twice a month, year round.

Yes, I think you're right; yet, using a scoring disc to guide? Sounds like a good way to chase the spotter.

Bingo!

Re: Which nightforce magnification for F class?

The benchrest models are 500-600 cheaper than the NXS. The turrets are covered with a screw on cap so you can't make adjustments as fast as with other scopes. They have 1/8 MOA as opposed to 1/4.

I prefer the CH-2 Reticle as opposed to the NPR1. I have both and the NPR1 is busy. It depends on your shooting philosophy and equipment. Why hold over 2MOA when you can turn the turret eight times and be right where you want to be? I dunno but I still do it sometimes. I use the windage hashes far more than the elevation markings. I also usually don't adjust during a competition because I find my self chasing the wind and mirage.

Extra magnification comes in handy when you have lots of pasties all over the target and it gets difficult to see the rings. The 22x is a solid choice and can double as a hunting rig easily. For pure BR I'd look at the benchrest series. They aren't tacti-cool but look pretty good.

Re: Which nightforce magnification for F class?

1/8 moa is nice. I have experienced having to hold high because my dope was in between 8.5 and 8.75moa. On a dedicated F-class rig the 8-32X would probably be the way to go for me. I dont mind holding for wind but i dont like holding for wind and elevation.

I have the 15X NSX. I shoot 500yd and 600yd F-Class. My Rifle is set up for long range hunting though, not F-Class, so for now i put up with it.
