I want a shooter that I can use in local matches and also in CMP Vintage sniper comps. Shot a mauser with 40 year old ammo in a match yesterday and actually did okay with it! I have the bug.

I do not know the difference between the carl gustavs and the oberndorfs.

And I am also of the understanding that these have the rail that the mount goes on so all I need to do is add a mount and an appropriate scope. True?

Anyone in the know please clue me in.

Thanks a lot,

Are you looking at an M96, or the M41b sniper rifle? For the M41b, Samco is the only importer/vendor that has them and I believe that they are down to only the ones without scopes (only the base being present). By the time you find the correct scope/base, you could probaby have bought a complete rifle on the private market that's matching and be money ahead. It will likely run you in the $2k neighborhood, however.

The M41b. That's good to know.

I don't know what the difference is between the carl gustav mfg. rifles and the oberndorf mfg. ones. Interested in a shooter not a looker.

I found a lot of info on the caliber and starting loads.

Functionally, there will be no difference between CG and Oberndorf M96. The Oberndorf rifles were made on contract in Germany for only a couple years, so they are fewer in number. How many (if any) were converted to M41b snipers I don't know and perhaps a Swedish expert can fill in the blanks.

I just checked Samco and I see that they have the M41b rifles without the scope/mount starting at $595. I'm not sure if they still have the bases attached, so that would be something to verify, as well. I do know that an original Ajack 4x90 scope will usually run $1k or more. I've seen them as high as $1500 with the mount attached. Accumounts carries repro mounts/bases. I have no experience with those particular parts, but do have several of their other items and have been happy with them. But, as I stated before, the cost to piece together a rifle in this manner could easily match/surpass a complete original that may be a better condition rifle to start with. I think the devil is in the details.

Cut the crap-shoot down to size and shop an original CG 1908 to 1911 if possible.

I would take any of MJ's suggestions over my own knowledge base. The guy knows his vintage sniper rifles.
