I don't shoot competitively. I just shoot with friends on my private range out to 800 yards. But I want good glass. I'm looking at either the Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 and the US Optics ST-10. I'm currently using a SS 10x. 10x is plenty for what I'm doing but I think the ability of having variable power would be nice. Is the glass on the ST-10 going to be that much better than the NXS to not have the variable power feature?

Id go with the 3.5x15, IMHO 22x is just too much, I was shooting a friends rifle at the 800 yard line the other day (he has the NF 22x and for my eyes it was clearer and easier to shoot at 14-16 power).
I also shot a .242 MOA group that day at 300yds with his rifle on 16x.

Those are two pretty diferent scopes, why those TWO?
They are both great scopes per application, if your gonna be shooting long range(800+) and even out to the 1300-1400 area, you'll probably want the NXS' magnification. The 10X is "enough" but a little shy on the long stuff. It's more at home on a "duty gun" where simplicity and strength are priority. If you have that kind of a budget I would look at some of the other options. the 3.5-15 is also a good one, or maybe the USO 3-17.

i like us optics better but i would take the variable nightforce if i had ti pick between the two just for versitility

Why? You can't trade one for the other. Either you need a variable or you don't. Either you need better glass or you don't. What you are asking isn't a scope issue, it's a question of preference. So, what is more important to you: glass quality or variable power capability? Neither are highest on my list of priorities for scope choice anyway.

I'd go for the NXS 5.5-22x50. But its hard to think of anything bad to say about a USO scope.
Either way you're going to be happy and have a great scope that will serve you well.

For a 308 my ST-10 rocks. If I was going to go variable, I would eat the raman and get an SN3 USO in 1.8 - 17 X 58 Low Profile, so double your budget ( $2010 )and get superior glass and you will be set. I have a SS10x and it's a nice scope, works great, but if I consider anything else it's nothing but US Optics. I have deployed with an SN4 and it went the duration even after it got beat up a little. The Customer Service alone gets my money and the product has the best warranty in the world hands down
