Well took my Remington 223 down to the smith. He told me my barrel is done. So i looking at what kind of barrel and lug im going to go with. Im pretty sure it will be a m40 contour Bartlein 1-8 chamber in 223AI at 22 or 23 inches. But not sure what recoil lug. What are you using and what do you like bout it?

I don't think it's going to make much of a difference. But preferably you want a flat one.

Never heard of one wearing out - aftermarket or factory.

What matters is flat and parallel (and fits on the barrel tenon of course). Second is the shape of the sides as that can make things easier or harder when removing from bedding.

this is what i have, just got it in a few weeks ago. they offer the stock recoil lug thickness (.19 something i believe?), .220 and .250

If you dont mind me asking, what do you base this recommendation off of?

    Re: Which recoil lug

Based on my experience, I'd recommend a thin, standard-sized lug.

I made the mistake of getting an oversized lug for my 6.5x47mm. I really didn't need it for such a small caliber, and I ended up having problems with the lug not fitting into my AICS stock.

I'd suggest you get a standard-sized lug, no thicker than 0.250". This will allow your barreled action to fit any stock (now and in the future), save you some weight, and work perfectly well with your little 223AI.

    Re: Which recoil lug

I sent William Roscoe two rifles to build and included Badger oversized recoil lugs with all my parts. Well guess what, William said they were NOT straight, at least not by his standards! He replaced both Badgers with STRAIGHT lugs from pacific tool and gauge. Was disapointed in Badger as I would have thought the damn things would at least be straight!

Not always. Ive seen a few that were piss poor to say the least. IMO, a PTG .250" lug is the way to roll.

I did not get the specific details on how far off they were but BOTH of them did not meet his standards and it was cheaper and easier to buy PT&G lugs then to resurface these.

when you are holding all other tolerances to half a bee's dick, installing a lug that is out one bee's dick doesn't make much sense.

300sniper, best "saying" I have heard in a long, long time... It may not be eloquent but it sure was to the point!

I hope you don't mind but I am going to borrow that and try to fit that into some of my conversations.
