Which Remington 700?

I have shot rifles before, but I am looking to buy my own first rifle. I have been looking at Remington 700 (308), but there are so many different models. What do the pros suggest for precision shooting? Budget is about 500-1,000 (for gun and scope).

If there is another post like this previous, I apologize.

Re: Which Remington 700?

I'm nowhere near a pro but, with your budget I would recommend what I did. Get a 700 sps varmint and a vortex viper 6.5-20x50. After base and rings you should be right around $1000.

Then as you go you can upgrade. Stock, trigger, reloading equipment, etc.

It’s addicting!

Good luck

Re: Which Remington 700?

Two options for rifle:

1. 700 SPS Tactical 20" (decent stock, lower muzzle velocities)
2. 700 SPS-V 26" (terrible stock, higher muzzle velocities)

I went with the 26" over the 20" because the longer barrel produces higher muzzle velocities and I needed that because I am going to be shooting at 1,000+ yards a lot this summer.

When I bought my SPS-V, it came with an AICS stock , so the factory stock differences between the two wasn't a factor in my decision.

With optics, I'd look at a 10x SWFA Super Sniper or Bushnell Elite 3200 ($300 each) One of my friends still uses the SWFA on his .50BMG and loves it, another one of my buddies had the Bushnell on his .50BMG and had no problems at all. Both compete in 1,000yd. matches with their fifties and while using those scopes, they've shot great scores and placed in the top 3 regularly.

If you'd like a variable power optic, I've owned two Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40 ($350-$380)...I sold one and I still use the other one. I'd steer clear of the BDC reticle though, that's what I use now and it's a bit too thick for me. But it still gets the job done. I had the Target dot reticle in the other one and I wish I still had it. I'd buy the Mil-Dot if you decide to go down this route.

There are plenty of other optics, some were mentioned in other posts, but these are the one's I've had experience with.

Just be sure to purchase a quality optic, don't settle for something cheap, it's not worth it. Besides, you can get more money back if you decide to sell it down the road and upgrade to something new.

Hope this helps.

Re: Which Remington 700?

Ditto just about what everyone else said.. Basically THE answer to your question.

Re: Which Remington 700?

My Original Setup
Remington SPS Tac .308---Got mine for $575 plus shipping & FFL
Falcon Menace 5.5x25x50---$500 shipped from sightwonders.
I would suggest a Vortex or a SWFA now that I have had a chance to look through them. The Falcon has eye relief issues... Along the lines of rings and base, everyone will tell you dont go cheap, but if its not in your budget just get a luepy dovetail setup and watch the sale page. This should get you started, then start saving for reloading equipment. It will give you better accuracy and save you money, especially when you get the addiction hard and cant turn back. And just keep spending and spending and spending... you get the picture. lol

Hope this helps.

Re: Which Remington 700?

Hey I was just curious why none of these Remington 700's have a free floating barrel.... I was thinking about getting an R700 SPS 26" 308.. But there is no free floating... idk what to do?

Re: Which Remington 700?

I'm working on a new .308 R700 SPS Varmint build as well... I found one on GunBroker for $510 + 15 s&h (locally they wanted over $100 more before tax). Excellent rifle for the $$$, but I agree that the stock is junk. I'll have an AICS on order in the next couple of months, though.

3 months ago, myself and a friend bought an R700 SPS-V. We wanted the 26" barrel because we shoot competitively at 1000yds and we planned to replace the stock with a high quality model. I immediately installed an AICS stock but my friend is still waiting to purchase a new stock.

We both reload our own ammunition and tested a whole bunch of different load combos. We eventually found the best load for our rifles and the performance we got out of that load has been amazing.

My rifle, with the AICS stock, shoots .5 MOA
His rifle, with the factory SPS stock, shoots .75MOA

This being said, you NEED to do is this:

1. Buy an SPS-V
2. Get the best scope you can buy
3. Get the best scope base and rings you can buy
4. Put a Harris bipod on it
5. Put the rest of your money into buying or assembling/testing high quality ammunition
6. Practice

they do have free floating barrels. Just slide a dollar bill between the barrel and the stock. I did run into one where the sling stud screw.nut hit the barrel.

My SPS tactical (20" bbl) was free floating unless you put pressure from a bipod on it. It was shooting groups that could be covered with a quarter (at 100 meters) and one that could be covered with a dime.

I eventually went to a Manners stock, but I am still evaluating the effect - my shooting days have been full of gusty winds...

BTW - if this is your first rifle you probably won't be going out to 1,000 yards before you rebarrel it. You may wish to consider a shorter & lighter barrel. I suggest going to a store and try holding some, for 5 min or so.....
