I have a new AR10, it is a Noveske N6 18" upper on an Armalite lower.

When I got it, I bought a new NF 2.5-10x24 and put on it. I immediately regretted the decision. I love the scope, but there is no reason to compromise trying to go compact on the optic since the rifle is so heavy already.

I am going to sell the NF and buy a Schmidt to put on it. Initially, I was positive I wanted the 4-16x42, and am still leaning that way. The only hesitance I have is that all the Schmidts I have owned were 50 or 56mm objectives. I like the size of the 42 but I dont want to buy one and regret not getting the 50 or 56. Any of you guys have all three (42,50 & 56) that you can compare directly, side by side in equal conditions?

I mean, it is not as if the 42 is saving a ton of weight or anything, so I am thinking that maybe I should go ahead and get a bigger one, but at the same time, I love the slimmer profile of the 42. Plus I have never tried one and kind of want to.

Rifle is for LR practice and plinking out to 700 yards. Also will be used for hunting occasionally, assuming I keep it long enough. What do you guys who have experience with all 3 think would be the best choice?

Had both the 42mm and have the 50mm and don't really see a difference. Get whichever makes you happy. Either way you are a winner

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

On flat top of an AR10 you'll have an issue with an S&B, which is why the IRA upper has 23MOA built into the receiver to accommodate a S&B scopes as well as others without an external mount with an angle built in.

On a straight flat receiver you will expect a S&B to top out around 750 yards, (depending). So you'll need something with a cant in it to work well.

Personally I like the 4-16X by 42 have several of them but mounting it "lower" might be a moot point when you consider what is actually available to mount it. Chances are it will mount a 42 the same height as a 50 because that is all that you can get.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

i have both 42mm and 50mm and i havent found a set of rings low enough to truly use the 42. the lowest rings i haev fit both the 42 and 50mm the same. as for light they are both amazing.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

Personally I like the 42 (having tried both).

Consider using the new LaRue LT-107 mount.
It aint cheap but gives you 30 MOA of forward cant.
I am getting ±13 MIL of elevation with mine.

FWIW, when I mounted my 42 as low as I could using Seekins lows, I got less than 9 MIL of travel.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

Thanks for the advice guys. Gotta love getting first hand knowledge on the exact specific topic I needed info on.

Although, this does create some indecisiveness. I was really leaning toward the 42, but if it is going to end up at the same height as the 50, there is not much reason to get a 42. I will keep kicking it around, and would appreciate any further info.

In the meantime, I pulled the NF off the AR10 and mounted one of my favorite scopes. A USO SN3 1.8-10x37. It is in LaRue QD rings and is just about the perfect height. I am liking it, at least just handling it in the house.

I will try and shoot tomorrow or Saturday. If I love it, I could then go ahead and order the Schmidt 4-16x42 and put it on my Patriot customized LTR.

Will get some pics shortly. The USO just looks right on the AR10.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

Another factor, pertaining to the 42 on the flat top of the AR10. Almost all of my shooting is inside of 700 yards. That is just the limit at the range.

I would obviously prefer to have it set up to be 1000 yard capable though.

Way I went (SN3) and it does match well.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

I am thinking I may leave the USO 1.8-10 on the AR10. Seems to be a good fit. A real low bottom end but still gets up to 10x, that is a good match for a semi auto.

Then I could either put the compact Nightforce on my LTR or sell it and buy the 4-16x42 Schmidt. That would also seem like a good match for the light weight LTR.

Will try and get some pictures of the AR10 up tonight. It looks good. I pulled the SOPMOD stock off of it and put it on my Colt M4 and took the UBR off the M4 and put it on the AR10. Makes more sense since the Colt is supposed to be light and handy and the AR10 is not. Putting the UBR on the 10 helped bring some weight rearward and balances it out better.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

You want to sell me your NF compact???

I might be looking for a 2.5-10x24 if it is in Mil/Mil version with Mildot reticle if the price is right. The S&B 4-16x42 is a great scope. It is my favorite.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

It is the most current version. 2.5-10x24, mildot, .1 mil adjustments (exposed turrets), zero stop, NV ready. In box with paperwork, etc, identical to the way I received it from NF 10 days ago or so. The scope passes for new. 100%.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

Hydro,
I've got both mounted on AR10's.
There is no discernable diference.
I'v shot the 42mm out to 1000 and it is fine.
I've only shot the 50mm to @ 700 yd.s.
Both are mounted in A.I. one piece base/ring combo which provides 18 MOA, if I recall correctly.
Plenty of elevation to get to 1000 and brute strong.

Re: Which Schmidt for my AR10

I got to the range today and put a few rounds through it. It was raining and kind of a dreary day, but not much wind. I was shooting under the comfort of the roof, LOL.

I put Slash's $150 Heavy Buffer in it and that cured the short stroking. The rifle ran 100% and every 5 shot group was sub moa at 100. Not much under an inch, but they were all about .8 and .9" gross. That was with FGMM 168. I am pretty impressed with it. Think it would shoot pretty good with a good load worked up for it.

I dont like how fast the brass piles up with a semi. I can make 100 rounds last me all afternoon with my bolt guns, but with the AR10 you just seem to fly through it. Makes me enjoy my bolt guns a lot more.

If I was hog hunting or something similar, I would be all over the AR10, but for range use and deer hunting, I think the bolt guns are more for me.

My #1 reason for not owning an AR10.
