I have taken a serious interest in long range shooting and eventually would like to get into some long range hunting! Hopefully i can save up to get a custom rifle to help with this. But before i purchase a new rifle i should buy a scope first that needs to be replaced on my main hunting rifle. This rifle so far holds sub moa out too 300 yards on cheap factory bullets. I am in the midst of developing a good load hoping to shrink the groups or keep them sub moa out too longer ranges. As for now this rifle will be used for big game and then targets out too 600 yards and eventually 800 yards when i get the new target set up.

Some people have told me to stick with a hunting scope and forget about long range shooting (my old man has never shot past 150 yards) and his buddy has never shot past 200 yards. I was thinking of going down the tactical route and getting like a good beginner Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50mm FFP. I figured this scopes has the most to offer out of everything in its class. Doesn't break the bank. Gets me good glass, i have had fantastic experiences with Vortex as a company, and it gives me the option of a low power for close shots on moose, yet the 16 for long shots on elk and the FFP allows me to use the reticle at all ranges.

Should i stick with a Hunting scope like the Leupold VX-3 or go and get myself a decent tactical scope like the Vortex and begin practicing on those new targets? I was just wondering everyones opinions, and thoughts on tactical scopes on hunting rifles

Agree, I have that scope and it is good to go for what you want to do now and in the future.

Re: Which scope?

Nothing wrong with a tactical scope on a hunting rifle, however, I tend to prefer SFP scopes for hunting. My only additional thought was if you are going to be shooting at longer ranges that are of known distance, a SFP will be fine, however, if they are unknown, FFP might be a better choice. Vortex or Leupold are good companies, but I would probably choose the Vortex. Nothing against Leupold, the ones I have have served me well, but Vortex seems to be more bang for the buck.

Re: Which scope?

Bushnel Elite 4200 Line would pay to look at.
Same if not better grade . Prices are unbeatable right now.
Have one in a 6-24X50 Mil got it through natchez.com for over a 1/3 off reg price

Re: Which scope?

Thanks too all. I was sold on the PST but mydads friend made a joke and comments on how I was spending too much money I don't need too. Either way I have to replace the scope and figured if I'm going to Try to get into long range then the tactical would be smarter
