12 should be good for you. I have the 12 and its good for me.
The 10x HD would be better I think, but for hundreds more $$.

I had a 10X that I traded recently and it did good out to 500. Our local range is going to be setting up some unknown distance stuff out to 600 in the near future. For my most recent precision rifle build, that I'll use for these matches, I'm planning on the 12X.

That sounds good I mostly shoot 200 and 400yd targets at a private range but I like to be able to stretch it out sometimes

It is hard to beat the new 12x42 Mil/Mil. You don't compromise much on exit pupil and field of view compared to the 10x42.
The 16x42 is pushing the limits and the 20x42 is really for those accustomed to shooting benchrest type scopes 24x and up. The tiny exit pupil takes some getting used to in regards to head placement.

The mil/mil is the main reason I'm interested in the scope(and the awesome mil recticle)

If you're doing F class I would get the 16 for all around use the 10 or 12 would be fine.
