WHICH THREADS/THREAD PITCH AND LENGTH ?

Re: WHICH THREADS/THREAD PITCH AND LENGTH ?

The American standard is 5/8-24TPI for 6mm through .30 caliber and many times up to .338 caliber. 5.56/2.23 and below usually use a 1/2-28TPI. There are a few exceptions to this rule depending upon your barrel contour.

Sometimes thread adapters are used to accommodate suppressors but one must be cautious about tolerance stacking and concentricity. Many good smiths can handle this, but it's something to keep in mind.

There are some that argue against 5/8-24TPI threads for .338 caliber as there is not enough "meat" around the bore, and wear at the muzzle can be detrimental to long-term accuracy - as the theory goes. Many suggest a 3/4-20 or 24 TPI variation of thread for the larger calibers.

Re: WHICH THREADS/THREAD PITCH AND LENGTH ?

Thanks Maverick10, appreciate the info. I see some of the brakes out there are other than the american standard of the 5/8-24 so it got me to thinking which thread pitch would give me the most options as far as different makers or styles of brakes.

Thanks again and ill probably stick to the 5/8-24 for this new 308 barrel.
