Im looking into getting a xlr folding stock for my Tikka T3. My goals, to have a compact and light backpack rifle.

Couple of questions from you guys that know.....
....how does it stand up to outdoor "abuse"?
....is it too heavy to make a carry rifle?

Thanks

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

XLR doesnt make the folding mechanism. It is made by ACE who makes the folding mechanisms for a bunch of platforms. I havent had any trouble with mine except with it coming slightly loose over time. As for weight... I have a PRS on mine but the folding mechanism itself doesnt weight enough to matter.

This is good info. Why would someone fork over $115 for the folding option from XLR if they can get the same for 50-60 from ACE? OR, is the option XLR uses, only made available to them?

I like the XLR and am giving it serious consideration for 1 reason.
I have the same stock and pistol grip on both of my AR's and I'd like to use the same stock and pistol grip on a bolt gun to keep the feel the exact same...and yet, have the bolt gun be a folder.

Seems the XLR chassis, with the ACE Folding Stock Mechanism w/ Integrated AR-15 Stock Interface would be the cat's pajamas.

Because you know not of what you type...

The three parts needed to make a non-folding XLR to an folder are as follows:

FSM - $59.99
http://riflestocks.com/store/product105.html

ARRB-C - $29.99
http://riflestocks.com/store/product27.html

PN - $19.99
http://riflestocks.com/store/product29.html

$60 + $30 + $20 + $7 Shipping = More than you pay XLR to include it with your stock in the first place (plus then you have to install it).

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

Drop XLR a line and ask, Kyle is very helpful.

One thing to consider if you are building a repeater:

XLR repeater chassis uses AICS-style mags. Even if you if modify AICS mags or get Alpha Type-2's, you'll be limited to less than 3.0" COAL, which is probably a bit shorter than optimum for 6.5x55 (though I have no idea what the factory throat on a T3 chamber is like).

Exactly why I posed it as a question and not a statement.
Thanks for the extra info as I did NOT know the answer and am now glad I do.

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

On a side note........One of the most important aspects of choosing aftermarket equipment is customer service. Sometimes you have to get a little extra info on products before throwing you time and cash into a new product. There are couple of other stock companies that just dont have that edge......customer service. Ive tried those and turned away.
So far XLR is nr 1 on my radar, just need send Mr Kyle a line.

Thanks for your input guys.......still waiting though on a input on my original inquiry if you could,,,,,

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

My folding mechanism weighs 3.1 oz. It is off the HD stock, but I think it is the same as the smaller stock.
I would think if you sent the Tikka 6.5 to Kyle he would build you a chassis. I sent him my Lawton 8000 short action and he made one for me, probably the only one in the world.

A phone call to him will answer all your questions, he's a good guy.

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

Guys i own a xlr chassis i have had it for about a year and a half, i added the folding stock to it about 6 months ago, i love the chassis, kyle is great i recommend one 100%.

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

Cant thank you guys enough 4 your input.

What Im trying to figure out is why the XLR is limited to 223 and 308 because of the lenght of the cartridge, and If theres a way to make it work?

From what I know is that all the Tikka T3s can use the same stocks....so why is the XLR limited to 223 and 308's?

Again thanks for sharing,

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

All the actions have the same spacing and inletting requirements, but 223 and 308 are short action, whereas your 6.5x55 uses long action magazines. As far as I know, the XLR is inletted for short action magazines. I wouldn't want to limit myself to the short length with a 6.5x55.

I use a stock T3 in 6.5x55 as my hunting rifle. You can't get a much lighter or more accurate rifle without paying for a custom. I also recently built a T3 with an XLR stock in 6.5 Creedmoor. The ballistics are similar and it fits in a short action. The XLR is relatively light for what it is, but I wouldn't want to walk a long ways with my Creedmoor. You could probably get one down to 10 or 11 lbs scoped if you kept the factory barrel and used a light scope. It's all about what you consider "lightweight."

Re: Who has XLR FOLDING STOCK?

Thanks Dan. Informative. Care to share a picture of your 6,5?

Yes ita a wonderful accurate hunting caliber. I never meant to buy one but after borrowing one from a friend few years back I just had to get me one and now its the rifle I grab most often. I usually walk for miles with my rifle, thus looking for a foldable stock to put it in a backpack. My handloads measure around 2,91 COL so they might work with a shorter magazine if Id really wanted to make this work.....maybe?

As good as the XLR idea sounds, maybe its just too heavy after all as you say.......

2.91" COL is do-able, but you'll need to either modify an AICS mag (remove the spacer), or run Alpha Type-2 mags (http://www.alphaindmfg.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=51 <-- note, I recommend only loading 9 rounds -- will fit 10, but the sides bulge making it hard to insert/remove the mags).

I'm in love with the XLR chassis -- but possibly a little heavy for a pack/carry hunting rifle.

You might want to ask Kyle if/when they'll start making the new carbon fiber model for actions other than Rem 700
