I figured this would be the answer

This is a very objective and personal topic. My vote would be for LA Precision Rifles if you want a 700 tuned up. I'd bet me money there over the above mentioned. However not knocking SAC in the least. I hear he's good people builds a solid rifle and no horror stories from SAC or LA Precision.

Re: Who is a good gunsmith to work on a rem 700p

god there are so many on this site

APA- American precision arms
GAP- GA Precision
SAC- Short action customs
Beanland
Graduous Rifles
Black Ops Precision aka: skunkworks
Louisiana Precision Rifles
Chad Dixon
Young's Guns of montana
Tactical operations
Kampfield Customs

i'm sure i'm missing a few of the guys on here. you'd be hard pressed to go wrong with any of them.

Re: Who is a good gunsmith to work on a rem 700p

that list that Big Joe gave you is the list to work with. Talk to some of them and get their time line for working on your rifle and the cost. Once you talk to them you can come to your own conclusion.

Barrel, trigger job, chambering, tuning and bedding the action has run me $700 up $900 when adding a break. I'd be leary of guys charging less than that, remember, you get what you pay for.
What is your location? Maybe there's a good one close.

Iv looked.. the only guy worth a damn has a 15-17 month wait right now

Re: Who is a good gunsmith to work on a rem 700p

Good gunsmiths are normally backed up. The wait is worth it, but that's the whole thing wait for a long time for something great, or wait a short time for crap.

Not neccesarily true. Big names and fancy websites don't make a quality smith. Check out Jon Beanland's website. (He doesn't have one) Hooper Ordnance has done some work for me with short wait times and very good work. Karl Feldkamp at Kampfeldcustom.com is smokin fast with minor work and he has build record setting rifles. All the big names listed above are proven smiths and their work is fantastic, but don't forget about the smaller shops. Many of them put out just as good of a product with a more personal experience and shorter times.

JMan,

We are new shop and vendor here on the hide and will be caught up on full builds in early September. Give us a call.

Thanks

There are a few things that you can do to an unmodified 700P that will make it competitive and consistent.

Things like skim bedding, cheek piece, better glass/mount/rings, should give it 1/2moa or close to it.

It is possible to set the barrel back and give it a match chamber, but by the time you pay to do that you may as well spend the $300 extra for the new barrel.
