I was looking at 338's on able ammo and most of them only have a 24" barrel but me if getting a big caliber i like long barrels . 26" and the winchest m70 shadow has a 26" barrel but i think its around 900$ . So i was thinking i could get a lefthand stainless savage for 670$ then buy a 338 rum barrel and have a great, powerful and good looking rifle. Brother told me i should just a sps in 300 rum but the fit and finish on them are shit and i dont really like wood on a rifle .

So heres what im thinking 30" ss 338 rum .750" muzzle diameter . Any one know who can make a barrel prefit i guess ? . Also what cost am i looking at im thinking 500-700$ range

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

Try Northland Shooter Supply you can find him over on savageshooters.com he's a vendor. I have never ordered from him personally but he seemed genuine when I spoke with him one time. Try Pacnor, McGowen, and Shilen. Pacnor and Mcgowen have specials for barrels people backed out on might check that out. As of right now thats all I know of for pre-fits.

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

Kreiger, Shilen, Mcgowen, Douglas, Criterion, and I can't remember them all off the top of my head. These guys all make pre fit barrels. Do like everybody else and check out Northland too. Only thing is they are all button rifled from Northland I believe. I use a Bartlein but they don't do pre chambered barrels.

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

Ahh thanks pyplynr I forgot about Sinarms...I've read some great reviews on him...not to send you away from snipershide but you can find an enormous amount of info on Savageshoters...Midway sells shilen barrels and the Northlandshooter guy usually keeps a stock of shilen and mcgowen barrels. I think ERshaw is another one but they aren't as equal as the others if I remember correctly they are also available through larry potterfield.

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

sim arms is a member here. not sure about being a sponsor, but ive seen him post.

dont forget Mcgowen (sp?) jim at northland carries them as well. guys mention benchmark and maybe rock will make one if you have the specs

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

Call McGowen directly. They will cut you a deal for being a first time customer. Mine was 30 bucks cheaper that way. I'm not sure what purpose you are building this rifle, but you might want to do some searches on 338 calibers here and over on Savage Shooters. A 338 edge will get you better velocity and down range performance with a shorter barrel compared to a 338 ultra. Most guys are running barrels that are 28 plus on these calibers. There was one guy around here that build a 338 ultra and was getting great performance, but if I remember correctly his tube was 32". Just something to consider.

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

Sin Arms does his own, which I think are McGowen blanks. He also does Brux and Rock Creek. Sharp Shooter Supply has Brux and Douglas. There's also Benchmark. Lot's to choose from. I have 2 6.5x47L barrels arriving tomorrow from McGowen. My first McGowen was a real tack driver (6br) so I gave them another shot. I think they still have a special going for prefits, something like $260 for stainless 26" tube.

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

+1 for the 338 EDGE. If your going to do a custom barrel you might as well do the best cartridge you can. As far as brass, You only have to neck up 300 RUM brass and with the the Nosler Custom brass you will be spending only $70 per 50 cases as compared to around $130 per 50 for the 338 Lapua and you will have very comparable ballistics to the Lapua as opposed to the RUM. At the end of the day it's your decision so don't make something you don't want but from the sound of it you want to do a 338 that can really sling some lead and in this case the EDGE will be better suited for you. Also, 30" barrel is great for this cartridge.

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

I have a Lothar Walther pre-fit for my Savage 10FP and I also have a Benchmark for the same rifle. As much as I like the LW barrel, the Benchmark is in my opinion a much better barrel. It's more accurate, less finicky on bullets, and cleans super easy.

Call Kevin Rayhill at Stockade Gun Stocks and have him cut and chamber a Benchmark for you. Or call Benchmark directly. They are really nice folks, and produce an outstanding barrel for the money.

Re: who makes custom savage barrels

L-W Prefit Match Grade Stainless, Sav Varmint contour, threaded and SAAMI chambered for .260 Rem, 28"x1:9". 1Kyd F Class usage, primarily. 1500 rounds thru, expecting at least another 1000 before accuracy should slip. I consider that to be a very conservative estimate. I am very pleased with it and its twin which I gave to my shooting partner.
