I noticed some new Remington 5r stainless take of barrels being offered for around $100.

Are there any smith's out there that'll install a take off barrel or are they pretty much tent stakes if you can't do it yourself?

Ballpark price if it's doable?

Not a tent stake. Sounds like a good buy if the barrel really is brand new.

If it head spaces on your action/recoil lug with no modifications it might cost you less than $50. I would probably install it for $40 if I was just torquing it on for someone local.

If the head space is short or long you might get into it for 2 or 3 times that much to have it fitted.

See if you can get the recoil lug the barrel was originally installed with when you get the barrel. If so, you might have a better chance of it head spacing without modification.

I second trying to get the recoil lug. It's a bit of a gamble. If it fits, no reason you can't torque it on yourself, check it with a gauge, and be done. However if it is out of spec, it seems you would have been better off to go with a prefit and nut from the get-go and have a quality after market barrel for similar money in by the time someone messes with recutting the shoulder, chamber, or both for you to make it work.

Remington uses .186-.190" thick recoil lugs. Having my own action wrench and barrel vise I have yet to com across a Remington barrel that has needed more than a .186 thick lug and often shorter is needed to pass on a NoGo gauge test. a custom ground .183" and one of PTG's .1865 lugs are what I keep on hand. FWIW, every Remington factory barrelled short action I have checked has failed a NoGo gauge. They must be using a guage that is ~.002 longer than everyone else.
