Why do people cut there 308 and other caliber rifle barrels to 18.5" and not say 18 or 19? Why I ask, Why? Is it some sort of magic voodoo length? I understand why 16.25" or 16.5", for the, just in case reason, or the, be on the legal safe side reasons, but why the hell 18 and a half?

Thanks.

Re: Why 18 1/2" ?

I wanted 16" of rifling. And yes, it balances the way I want it to at that length with the contour I have.

Re: Why 18 1/2" ?

18.5 balanced better with my contour barrel and stock. The .5 inch left was done by Nolo in Laredo just in case I wanted to redo my crown or thread it at a later date. He likes to leave a little room to play with,

Re: Why 18 1/2" ?

Because if you take 18.5 and multiply it times 2.7 then add 157, then divide by the square root of 9, you get 68.983333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333.... which many speculate is the most snipery number in existence.

No magic or special length. I build a lot of 18.75" .308s. They shoot fast and accurately. With a suppressor mounted, they are the same length or shorter than a factory 26" gun. It just happened to be where I compromised on length, velocity and handling. I do things and choose mods to my rifles that I think cumulatively make them unique to KMW. One could also ask the "Why" question about some of those. I also absolutely LOVE the number 68.983333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333.... as it evidently makes the rifles shoot very F&*^ing accurately.

Have a safe week.

Just make sure you don't drop one of those "3s" when measuring...or it'll never work.

Re: Why 18 1/2" ?

Isn't min. legal barrel length in Canada 18"? I think I remember this when I was researching why a lot of short barrels for M14s were 18.5" and that was the reason I found.

Re: Why 18 1/2" ?

I wanna say Canada regulates rifles the same as shotguns, overall length matters, barrel length doesn't. Seems odd, but you can buy a short barreled pump shotgun as long as the overall length exceeds 26", the real oddity to me, is you can't shorten one, has to be manufactured that way. Semi-autos must have 18" tubes.
