I've been doing more reading and picture viewing here than posting. One thing I've noticed is that it APPEARS as though a lot of you are running 1"+ diameter barrels on your rigs. I bought a Rem 40xc with what I'd consider an excessively heavy barrel and I took it out of the XC McMillan stock to make it a bit lighter in an HS Prec PSS stock. It's more portable, but still no featherweight. In comparing my 40x to my PSS, I can't think of any reason, other than the quality feel of the X action that would prompt me to take it into the field.

So my question is: why are you guys creating what appears to be field guns with what (and again, I repeat) APPEARS to be 1"+ diamter barrels in calibers under 30 cal?

This isn't an attack, just curiosity.

You won't find a lot of "field" rifles (meaning other than prone/bench) with barrels as heavy as you are describing.

The guys you see with sewer pipe sized barrels don't carry them very far.

A larger diameter barrel is stiffer and more consistent than a small diameter. However there are diminishing returns. I prefer a Sendero profile barrel because I think it combines the best balance of weight and rigidity. That and I don't have to hog a barrel channel out to fit one.

Going thicker than M40 profile is overkill IMHO.

A lot of guys who only shoot prone like the MTU contour because it makes for a heavy, easy-to-shoot-all-day rifle. But it's hard to beat a Medium Palma contour for .30 Cal in the tactical game.

I think you are mistaken. I rarely see rifles that are 1"+ at the muzzle around here. Most are #7/M40/M24 contours. Some heavier MTUs are here and some lighter palmas as well but 1"+ are more the exception than the rule.

I dont mind a little weight to my gun and I like the look of a short fat barrel but as a tactical rifle MTU is about as big as Id want. I have a Ruger 77/22 with a 24" stainless .920 bull and even in the light stock it has its still no fun to carry squirrel hunting.

i got an m40 profile barrel thinking that was what i wanted, and that seemed to be the "norm" around here.

while i like it and its not tooo heavy, i wish i had opted for something a little lighter, like the medium palma alot of people suggest, or maybe light varmint. i cant imagine having a straight taper or mtu contour barrel.

i don't know why do short guys buy huge trucks, why do guys with tiny dicks always brag about how big they are.

I had one straight taper barrel years ago never again unless its a 338 of some sort. medium palma is as heavy as i will go.

I agree, there are a few people around with crazy heavy barrels. I too have had some over heavy barrels early on. I rationalized addidional accuracy would come. In a field rifle, it just doesn't make sense.

no thats perfect if you are 5'2" have a 10"lift on your truck and have a 2" dick. LOL

not to shit on ur thrad, but what weight and barrel dia. at end of barrel are you guys gettin with the medium palma contour with say a 22-24 in barrel? are we talkin maybe half pound diff in that and a m40 contour?

I have never fondeled a med palma and have a chance at one in 6.5 for my 260 build im puttin together and previously been lurkin around for something like the m40 contour to show up...want to have a finish weight of around 14lbs for my rifle when its said and done.

Well this is only a 28" tube .22LR with the stock 40-XB heavy (ass) barrel... but I'm 6'1" and my truck only has a 3" lift.
