Why Are You Fucking With Drones?!

Because they can be a great tool if used properly. For me I'm working on putting together a land surveying/scanning system. For some here they can be great for long range target viewing...some of the camera/video and base station stuff they have now is great
Exactly my point! They have so many useful purposes, but people such as the inventors in the vids I posted are using them for asinine ways!
the purpose of inventing is often to make money...not exactly asinine-- just playing to an asinine market. People are stupid and will buy anything.
My kids and I each have stunt drones and my kids recently also got a pair of battle drones that are freaking amazingly fun. Almost like aerial laser tag!

Sounds like fun. Ive been wanting to get one but money always seems to go elsewhere...like $250 tomorrow for a new alternator....
Last weekend they had a drone incident at one of the ski towns here in Colo. They pull skiers with horses down the street and over jumps.
Some jackoff was flying his drone over the event trying to get close ups and it freaked out the horse that then ran into the crowd and fucked a few people up. No more drones at events like that.
My son flies fixed wing air ambulance and has had 2 near misses with them, one on approach and one on takeoff. He hates the fuckin things.
Used responsibly I think they have a lot of good uses but there are always some assholes that fuck it up for everyone. FM

I need another hobby like a kitten needs a Gulfstream V. But I am fascinated by drones.
Closest I have is a couple of little RC helicopters that I use indoors to chase the cats around. They are a hoot.
But a serious outdoor drone is something that definitely interests me. But right now, they are like an ATV. I really want one, but I can find no real justification for one. Between trucks, tractors, jeep, lawn tractor, etc. etc. etc.... and the fact that I walk when hunting. And riding an ATV doesn't interest me.... I can find NO reason to own one. Yet I still lust after having one. Maybe when I get old and infirmed. A drone is kind of the same way. I really want one, but I can't come up with the justification.
So hope this thread keeps going. Because I would love to hear from some of the folks here who are drone-fliers and enthusiasts. Sooner or later, I'll get one. Maybe I can use it for artillery spotting?

We had a fairly sizeable brush/grass fire here last summer. They brought in helos with drag buckets to help fight it in some of the more remote areas. Somebody had a drone and we trying to get a closeup of the action. They had to pull the helos for about an hour and only fight with ground crews until the got the thing grounded. They are fun, but you have to have some common sense.
I think Arctic Light was really heavily into Drones at one point. Doing surveying and photography. Hopefully he chimes in.

Well Sirhr, if you're looking to get into drones, they really aren't an expensive hobby to get into. Sure, like all other hobbies, you can take it to the extreme and get overly large and expensive drones. Anyways, I'd recommend starting off with a medium sized stunt drone. Stunt drones seem a lot more forgiving for first timers who crash them a lot while practicing indoors. Here's the one I been flying for a few months so far:

I don't recommend the smaller ones because those are next to impossible to play around with outside. Even the slightest breeze will have them all over the place.

Glad you brought that up! That's another reason why the smaller ones aren't a good starter because pretty much all the small ones do require you to have a smart phone to use as the control. Anyways, mine has a control with the look and feel similar to a PS3 controller. It's a streaming drone which means that not only can I take pics and videos and record them directly to the Micro-SD card (sold separately), but also directly to my phone and watch it fly in real time in FPS mode. There's also the non-streaming version which does the same thing just minus the streaming part to your phone. Here's the price of the one I own:

A friend of mine works S&R in a busy county in CO. He is finishing his degree in some sort of aeronautical study with the dream if using drones for S&R.
Our Flight for Life program does a lot of assistance with searches with NVG and they deploy avalanche rescue teams to the scene, including seach dogs and avy pros.
Helicopters are pricey and running them is too, so this is a possibility to save time, $, and resource management.
Think of a transmitting FLIR setup to do a grid search looking for the dumb asses the S&R teams get to look for in the middle of the night. Or day time but dont have a clue where they are. That drone could be payed for quickly in Jet A savings alone, besides the time on the helicopter and crew costs.

If anyone is thinking about getting one to check targets, research the ones you're looking at to see how they do in wind. My kids have little drones about the size of dinner plates; if the wind's blowing, they're about useless. I'd suspect a similar sized drone with more weight and the motors to match that weight would fair better.
You tell me what's asinine then. My sons and I harmlessly playing with our drones at the park and having good quality father/sons time? Or some dipshit kid barely of legal drinking age flying his stupid "selfie drone" around a bar annoying the patrons?

You can get them as big as you want...nano size to full scale.
Here is one that all you have to do is add an flight controller, proper base station or transmitter and you're good to go...anyone with about a 10 channel transmitter can make it work.
By the way...the controller (auto pilot) that you can do this with is about 300 bucks or less....can have FPV video. And if you want it to be really cool you can add a century unit to the gun and it can do auto fire, auto tracking.

Maybe you should click on think, read the definition of asinine; and realize they are both asinine uses of drones.
We had some guys come out and demo a fair sized drone/Hud rig a few summers ago.
Very impressive piece of equipment.
Real time camera/goggle equipped.

Why would having fun at the park with his sons be asinine? Seems like a nice way to spend an afternoon. My dad and I used to launch Estes Industries Model Rockets. The drones sound like way more fun.
Drones are pretty rad. Most of the filmers and photographers that I work with (backcountry skiing) either have one or have a drone operator they use on the routine. It lets them film/shoot photos from angles that were previously reserved for helis. Seeing as how a good drone costs less than a day's heli time, they quickly pay for themselves. It's also a lot easier to coordinate than having a heli fly in for a shot, you can fit a drone in a big pelican case on the bag of your sled (snowmobile) and bring it into the zone you're planning on filming in. I've even been involved in film photo shoots for heli-ski companies where they used drones to film despite also filming from the heli with the doors off. Pretty cool. They just keep getting easier to fly and able to mount better, heavier camera rigs too. I've only ever tried flying the tiny ones indoors though and alwats managed to hit the ceiling pretty quick. I'll just stick to the skiing, haha
