Ok, ever since i saw the movie..i wondered this..and i searched here and couldnt find anything...

WHY..in the begining..did Mark Wal. seem like he manually chambered each round in the Barrett? when he was shooting at the Helo...ive always wondered this. didnt sem like it was jamming

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

could be wrong but dont think they had hot enough blanks to run the bolt. that's only my theory. Personally if I were Barrett, I would not have let them shoot that sequence w/o the gun working "automatically".

just looks bad on Barrett.....

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

Then again, maybe they wanted to add to the action that was going on in the scene. But I noticed that as well, anyone that knows anything about that rifle, knows it's not a single shot.

This is what i thought..more action (like shifting 50 times in a minute on Fast and the Furious! ha) but then maybe it wouldnt cycle? idk..

my latter thought on it jamming doesnt seem logical just because.. i dont think they cared THAT much on accuracy of weapons and all..

Of course i could/probably am wrong

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

in the beginning he also was on target in one frame on an identified hostile with the bolt open, the camera goes to the target, then back (bolt is now closed), back to the target (bolt is now open again) then the shot rings out.

ruined the rest of the movie.....i'm sure the airsofters were "boned"

in the same spirit, i'm sure he chambered every round so the the very tip of the bullet isn't deformed in the slightest to give maximum consistancy form round to round

you know how anal mark is...

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

In the scene where Robocop kills ED-209 with a Barrett (Cobra Gun) you can see the blank stovepipe.

You'd think these movie people would put lighter recoil springs in the guns to get them to function with blanks.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

"Shooter" is on TV here this weekend. (Well I guess its everywhere on DirecTV

I'll look for it.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

according to the dvd featurette I watched about the weapons in "shooter" they had problems with it jamming, so it seemed like he was cycling it manually when what he was doing was clearing the jam, add poetic license and creative editing and the M107 turns into a bolt action

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

Rifles which are gas-operated (AR-15 family/M-14/M1 Garand) can simply put a obstruction (blank firing adapter) on the end of the barrel to restrict gas flow (not stop it) and build enough pressure to operate the system. For movies they usually just fill in the end of the barrel and leave a small hole for some gasses to escape so you can't see the obstruction, the weapon still cycles, and you still get a muzzle flash.

The Barrett is recoil operated however and therefor makes this more difficult. The M2 .50cal is recoil operated but has a huge external device that runs the length of the entire barrel although I've never actually seen one in person to figure out how it works. However a similar device on the Barrett would look rather bad on the movie screen.

Lowering the strength of the recoil springs would probably just make them so weak that the bolt wouldn't be able to function properly either. The buffer spring has to allow the bolt to move rearward, feed and chamber a new round while pushing the hefty bolt back forward. The springs on the barrel collar that allow movement to assist in recoil absorbtion then have to pull a barrel that weighs about 12 pounds a couple inches to put it back in place.

Hopefully that all makes sense...

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

I don't reall care about the Barrett scene....I like how Mark picks up the Cheytac and shoulders it like it's an m14 or something. I'm 6'1" 215lbs and when I pick up my 40lbs windrunner/uso scope and shoulder it I almost shit my pants. He must have had a prop gun made out of aluminum or plastic.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

In one instance, as the chopper makes it's final approach while firing on the Funky Bunch (after Donnie gets it) there is a jam which he clears manually. All of the other times are just because he's Marky.

What about him shooting his .408 with his dog right next to the muzzle and ruining a can of Dinty Moore. Total prick.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

That whole first scene drove me insane...( well once they engaged) The mil holds for a moving vehicle were absurd, and to get a head shot on the driver... oh and dont you love the 900yds+ M203 shot.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

So, has there ever been an accurate sniper movie? i like "enemy at the gates" but again not sure how accurate it was portrayed.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

Well, I had a movie director over to my place a couple weeks ago to go over sniper equipment and TTPs. Some are trying...

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

i am i the only one that realized that was just a movie, not an instruction manual? when a car explodes hiroshima-like fireball during a crash in other movies, do you get on the internet to ask why?

the weapons coordinator is (or was?) registered on this site and explained a few things about this. apparently it was suggested that the manual cycling of the barret be edited out but the directors didn't seem to care. the chey-tac was also made from aluminum and i believe now resides in the chey-tac office (or at least that is what i think i read the last time this came up).

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

Actually, the one used in the office if the AG was aluminum. The other(s)were real CHEYTAC M200's with smooth bore blank only barrels out of aluminum.

There was a russian sniper named Vasilli Zietzev (not sure on spelling, can't remember) for sure, that's all that's ever been proven outside of the then Soviet Union, Konig has never been proven to have existed, certainly not in that AO.

But agreed, good movie

you are not alone, yeah i know what you mean.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

There's a lot more 'WHY'S' in that movie than should be allowed.

Why is the cheekpiece on the wrong side for a 'lefty'?
Why do you hear muzzle blast on the replay of the Bishop getting taking out, from a 2000 yard shot?
Why can't I find a can of Dinty that damn big?
Why is the brunette (chick of course) so damn cute?

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

I'm always amused how movie shooters take a rifle and get 1 inch groups at 1K meters and above. If whishing worked I'd have all my rounds in the same hole.

Why is there another thread about this film in the Bear Pit?

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

What I dont understand is why he had to fire so many shots at the helicopter in the first place, he obviously was such a good shot, why couldn't he hit it right the first or even second shot. and furthermore, why didn't he retrieve his Barret when said bird was first spotted, and perhaps avoid the untimely death of his spotter? A .308 is a great weapon, but difficult to bring down an aircraft with, a .50 is better suited for such a feat.

The reason why he wasnt reloading itself is because they where just using blanks and wasnt strong enough. I was reading that on shooter imdb and it says in wiki movies as well

Haha well said

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

The book "Notes of a Sniper" by Vassili Zaitsev is a great book and the movie "Enemy at the Gates" is very loosely based on it. Still great movie and even better book. Once again the poetic license was used liberally on this one.

He was wearing invisalign braces. You can see them in one or two scenes.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

How can you expect them to get anything right if they can't even figure out Camp Lemonier is in Dijibouti and not Ethiopia.

What's even worse is as bad as that movie is I bet every one of us stops and watches it when it's on tv

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

have you guys read the books the movie was based off of? the writer has a whole series with those characters and a bunch of other books dealing with snipers and rifles.

o btw when he is shooting the dinty moore am i retarded or does he move his windage turret and the elevation starts to raise to the target, and it seems like the can is 10 yards away, im not sure if they were trying to have him make a mile shot at home so he knew it was possible or just a long shot to get an idea for it. but overall i do like the movie.

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

He and Donnie should have used the .50 rufus round on the so called enemy trucks from the beginning, and blew them off the road. And one .50 rufus round at the chopper would have blown it out of the air.

Tom

Re: Why in "Shooter"....

what i thaught was son stunning is one one night they are in kentuky and the next day they are in Montana. thats some major trucking in an old beat up dodge pickup. but i guess no one nows there geopraphy any more so they can get away with it.
