Might be a dumb question. ive reloaded alot for many diff calibers. i am trying the lapua brass for 308 now. Just an off the all question, why are they treated at the top, and what does it do. Figured id ask.

All brass is. It is called annealing. Some brands clean the brass afterward to remove that artifact of the process. It gives the cases more consistent neck tension.

If you dont initially like to look of annealed brass just give it some time... it begins to grow on you

In a nut shell the annealing process slightly softens the brass at the case neck... this process aids in case life and if continued on thru the process of handloading many times, can increase the usable life of brass cases by preventing split necks.

With other brands who knows?

My last batch of Winchester 300WM brass would not group, no matter what I tried. I did notice that the bullets seated with inconsistent pressure and with more seating resistance than other brass that I had annealed and they did not resize as small. Hmmm...

I annealed a lot of 25 pieces of virgin brass and shot all 25 into a sub-moa group on steel at 1000 yds.

I don't know if they skipped the step, or they were under-annealed, but they sure shoot great now. Never run into this before.

Annealing, in metallurgy and materials science, is a heat treatment wherein a material is altered, causing changes in its properties such as strength and hardness.
