Why not a lot of chatter about 30-378?

Re: Why not a lot of chatter about 30-378?

being that this site is a 'tactical' site, it dictates that the lack of readily readily available ammo is why the .300 Win Mag does better or gets discussed here more often. Typically you will see favor gained by rounds that are used by the military. That said, there are a lot of newer rounds specifically in the 6 and 6.5mm arena that are gaining popularity, so maybe there is hope for the 30-378. I think the 7.8 Lazzeroni is the top dog of the .30s, but I am not 100% sure how it or the 30-378 stack up to the .30-338 Lapua. I think one of the big detractors is the expensive brass and ammo for the big bore weatherby rounds. They are fast, and can reach way out there though. Just jump ahead of the crowd and do a .30-408 CheyTac... LOL

The 30-378 has a couple things going against it. First, in factory rifles, there is a lot of freebore. That is how the cartridge safely develops the velocity. Naturally, freebore tends to reduce accuracy.

Second and more important to people on this site, is the poor barrel life. I have heard (I haven't verified) that throat wear can be detected in 50 rounds. Even if that is an exaggeration, it uses 25% more powder than a 300 wm, a cartridge that is not known for barrel life.

While the cartridge may have some novelty for hunting, I think most people on this site would balk at replacing a barrel that often. I know I would rather spend money on practice ammo than rebarreling every 1000-1500 rounds.

But if you aim too high you might shoot yourself in the back of your head.

i worked with a guy that had one. he had 150 rounds through it and it had severe throat erosion. the barrel would have been completely shot out by 300 to 400 rounds. his had a factory barrel on it and did not produce very good accuracy. he did have the fastest 30 cal in the group though

Re: Why not a lot of chatter about 30-378?

I know there are some hard kicking rounds out there that are stronger than the 30-378 but the one I had in a Weatherby had a vicious kick to it and muzzle blast with the brake on was horrible. Did not want to shoot it after 5 rounds with the brake on and less than that with the brake off. It also took a pretty good bit to feed that monster too.

My father has a 30-378 that I have shot quite a bit, done load development for and hunted with. It is a very nice gun, very hard hitting and if you hit any animal with it, the shock it delivers really puts them down hard. On the other hand, it is expensive to feed, fairly punishing to shoot, accuracy does not last long between cleanings and was a bit challenging to work up an accurate load for.

TLong,

It's cheaper to dial the scope up a few more clicks than replace barrels every 500 rounds.

I've got a 30-375 Ruger that sends 240 SMK's at 2925 fps.I'm crossing my fingers and gritting my teeth hoping to get 1500 rounds down the tube.

Better off just going up to 338 and taking advantage of the extra BC of the 300 grainers or go off the deep end and step up to 375 CT with projectiles approaching 1.1BC.

Re: Why not a lot of chatter about 30-378?

Thanks for the insight guys. I was just curious. A friend of mine, (who used to have some money) bought one of the rifles offered by "The Best of The West" TV show, in a 30-378 after watching an episode. I don't know exactly how many rounds he's had through it, but it will still knock a deer's dick in his watch pocket at 800-1k, with good accurracy. That's what got me to thinking and looking on here, but wasn't very successful with the search. Thanks again. I think I'll stick to my "normal" calibers!!
