Rifle Scopes Why one piece mounts (lack of scope position flexibility)?

Everyone seems to love the one piece mounts like Spuhr/Badger are etc. and I'm not denying it, I've tried them a couple times and you can't argue with the quality and fit/finish etc. I'm sure the level durability/repeatability that if you have to take it on/off it's better for zero, there's probably less chance of the scope mount axis being off, and if you need to beat someone to death with your scope it's stronger. Lately though it seems like we've finally seen a lot of great talk and emphasis on how important proper gun fit/scope positioning, etc. and it just seems like most of the 1 piece mounts are not flexible enough to get the proper scope position, at least for me.

For example on my TRG, with the Spuhr direct mount for the sako rail, with a Vortex Razor Gen 2 there is only about 1/16" to move the scope back/forth in the mount and I simply can't get it far enough forward to be comfortable and have the right eye relief even with the mount/recoil lug in the farthest forward position. The only thing I could do is add stock spacers but my length of pull for my trigger finger is already a touch longer than I want it to be. Tried one on my AI and it's a little better but only because I have a pic rail I can slide it way forward on, but even at it's farthest forward position it's right on the edge of where I'd want the scope to have a clear view prone. I like the idea of the direct mount but have to sacrifice my body position to make it work.

I guess I'm just surprised to see so many using 1 piece mounts when it seems you give up so much in scope position. I'm 5-10 with a typical build it seems unlikely that I'm the only one that has issues getting their scope in the right spot with some of these mounts, maybe I have a freakishly long neck and didn't know. It just seems like a good set of individual rings offer so much more position option.

I don't have that problem. I have one piece mounts on most rifles, and it is not at all hard for me to put the scope exactly where I want it.

I do like shooting a bit shorter LOP, I have no spacers in my TRG or AI. I suppose the type of 1-piece mount and scope matters to, some mounts with less wide rings and more spacing between the rings probably allow more room to shift the scope a bit forward/back in the mount itself. If you had a scope with smaller knobs as well it would allow more movement.

Typically you would mount rings or a 1-piece mount as close to the turret housing for rigidity anyhow. I've personally never moved ring mount locations on the scope tube to gain clearances. That I do on the rail. Easy on a full-length rail of course, but on something say like a short R700 rail I could see the problem. Granted, I'd then be in the market for a different rail before I had a wonky ring-to-tube mounting location.

Just my two cents ;)

I have a trg22 w pic rail. I also have pic rail on all my rifle. With pick rail and as mount, it is very quick to adjust the scope position. Here is my though on trg and rifle specific mount. Like the op said, there is not a lot of adjustment/room to move if you have scope mounted already. But on the other hand, when you have a rifle specific mount. it is like using a ring set, you are suppose put the mount on rifle first. Then install the scope on the mount/rings. Then it is set for that rifle and not remove from the rifle.

I also have this problem. I’m sure it’s my rifle setup or awful positioning but I am CONSTANTLY hunting for a good sight picture and have resorted to using a longer LOP than is comfortable or natural feeling for me. It feels like if I get it set up perfectly for prone it’s a mess at the bench or positional, and viceversa
