wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

Re: wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

I think if you do a search you will find that the Wideners mil-spec are not that great of a bullet . I have never personally used them but read enough anecdotal evidence to convince me I didn't want to waste my money .

Re: wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

They're good for the money, but not as consistant as others from sierra, hornady, etc.. You may want to buy a smaller amount and see how they shoot. I bought 1000 myself, and was a little disapointed. My groups opened up and they produced more flyers. I weighed and compared the variences compared to sierras, and they were a lot worse. I guess it depends on what you're expecting for discount bullets.

Re: wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

I bought some of their 168gr BTHP's and they sucked.

No consistency at all. I bought 500 and had to sort them into five different groups to get any kind of accuracy. I had some that would not hold neck tension at magazine length. I had to load them long to get enough tension.

If their 175's are the same, I say stay away.

I will stick to Nosler CC's.

Re: wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

They arent bad if all you are doing is fireforming cases and not actually shooting them for groups or accuracy.

Or if you are reloading for a gasser for general blasting ammo.

Re: wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

They are what they are, milspec. I can't speak for the .30s, but I use the .224 75 grainers for 200 yard ammo at reduced matches. They're good for about MOA. Want better? Pay more.

Re: wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

I bought the 145 gr FMJBTs and for BULK BULLETS I considered them to do very well indeed. Although this is a SNIPER forum, I don't own a "precision rifle" as such. I lurk around here to get info so I can improve on what I DO own-plain jane AR-type gasburners.
I will try to attach a pic of a target shot with the Widener's "mil-spec" bullets. I can't figure out how to attach a pic--Let's just go with typed description.
Using a Bushmaster BAR-10 20" a2 @ 100 yds.
5 rds into a 1.180 group including one pulled flier.
The best 4 rds were .882 and the best 3 were .450.
This was using a Weaver 2-10X scope on a carry handle mt.
Mixed headstamp LC brass, 42 grains surplus 4895 from Pat's reloading, CCI milspec primers, light crimp w/Lee fact crimp die, 2.795" OAL. Nothing special at all.

They are not the specific bullets you asked about, but they show me that maybe these milspec bulk bullets don't get the credit they deserve. But I'm not trying to win any 1000yd matches either. Buy a few and have fun.

Re: wideners mil-spec 175gr fmjhp .308

I have gotten just over MOA in a 308 M70 factory barrel (FN PBR). If you really want accuracy these are likely not for you. Like others have said they are not bad blasting bullets.
